Ninguna sociedad puede existir sin autoridad, pero cada una de ellas tiene una modalidad particular para enfrentar esta inquietud, sin lograr jamás darle una solución definitiva. La sociedad chilena no escapa a este desafío. Si, por un lado, los individuos revelan una conciencia generalizada de lo inadecuado del autoritarismo, por otro lado se encuentra más que asentada la convicción de que sólo su ejercicio discrecional y fuerte, o sea "autoritario", permite garantizarla de manera efectiva. ¿Cómo explicar esta ambivalencia? La clave, sostiene este libro, es el miedo a los subordinados, un fantasma social generalizado en el país. Se trata del temor constante a ser desbordados por aquellos sobre quienes se debe ejercer la autoridad. Una aprensión de la que el autoritarismo extrajo y extrae su fuerza y su continuidad, porque es concebido como la única manera de lidiar, práctica e imaginariamente, con el temor de no lograr ejercerla.

This Element discusses the consequences on the social bond of the conjoint action of the economic and social model inspired by the premises of neoliberalism and of the powerful pressures for the democratization of social relations in Chilean society. It is based upon empirical research developed in the past fifteen years. The main argument in this Element is that these processes have had as one of its most important effects the generation of a circuit of detachment, that is, a process that leads to different forms of disidentification and distancing from logics and principles that govern social relations and interaction. It is a dynamic circuit consisting of four components: excess, disenchantment, irritation, and, finally, detachment. The Element analyzes this circuit and each of its components as well as its consequences for the social bond. It also includes a brief reflection on the impact of this circuit over the political bond.

La transición inacabada alude a la decisión deliberada de los actores políticos de evitar referirse a los mínimos necesarios para convivir en comunidad. ¿Por qué, entonces, de pronto se aceptó revisar aquellos mínimos y establecer una nueva Constitución? ¿Por qué si durante tanto tiempo se convivió con el fantasma de la Constitución de 1980, de pronto se acepta reemplazarla? ¿Fue tan solo un acto de temor a la protesta de la calle de aquellos agitados meses de 2019? En este libro se ensaya una mirada multicausal para explicar los factores que gatillaron aquel inédito proceso que se desencadenó el 18 de octubre de 2019. Así, se abordan los cambios en las relaciones de poder y la secuencia de reformas institucionales que gatillaron y dinamizaron el activismo social durante tres décadas.
