El hilo conductor de este relato es el proceso que el tribunal inquisitorial de Toledo siguió, entre 1651 y 1654, contra el barbero francés Beltrán Campana. Las actas completas de esta causa se conservan en el Archivo Diocesano Conquense. Apresado en la villa de Torrijos por negarse a cumplir con el precepto católico de confesar y comulgar una vez al año, Beltrán Campana no tardó en encontrarse frente a los inquisidores. El proceso muestra de manera ejemplar la tenacidad de su defensa de la libertad de conciencia y la prontitud de los jueces en reconocer, en sus encendidos alegatos, el sombrío rostro de la herejía. Reivindicar la tolerancia suponía una amenaza en la católica monarquía hispana, que había forjado su identidad sobre la unidad de la fe de sus súbditos. Los mecanismos de disciplina se multiplicaron en la Edad Moderna; adoctrinamiento, vigilancia y control se conjugaron en la época para hacer de los súbditos de la Monarquía Católica un conjunto de fieles y obedientes cristianos. En esta intransigente coyuntura, un extranjero pobre y vagabundo, ajeno a normas y costumbres, defensor de una libertad de pensamiento inconcebible, constituía un desafío insoportable.“(…) El libro, sin perder su carácter reflexivo, incluso especulativo, es ante todo, en su historia, conmovedor. Pareciera que en estos dos últimos años se ha vuelto a desatar de manera inesperada la furia de la naturaleza y la cólera de los tiranos (la pedagogía del terror) para devolver a una parte de la humanidad a épocas de terror y penitencia. La pandemia de la Covid-19 y la guerra de destrucción total desatada en Ucrania han vuelto a despertarnos del sueño relativamente plácido en el que nos encontrábamos en la vieja Europa. En verdad, esa placidez estaba empañada por una galopante desigualdad social que se venía acentuando desde la crisis de 2008, y que la pandemia no ha hecho más que reforzar. La desigualdad se ha erigido, pues, como el principal paradigma a raíz de estas crisis. Ante este panorama la incertidumbre y el miedo se han abierto camino como nunca antes en los últimos ochenta años; sus primeras víctimas son, por este orden, los millones de personas (hasta 18, según las últimas estimaciones) que han perdido su vida a causa de la pandemia, los millones de refugiados ucranios que huyen del horror, los miles de muertos en la guerra, y, finalmente, la desconfianza y el miedo al otro que puede ser transmisor de una enfermedad potencialmente mortal o que, obedeciendo órdenes emanadas de un autócrata, intenta aniquilar todo lo que tengo y lo que soy como persona y ciudadano, incluida mi vida y la de los míos. Pero nada de eso ha sido ni será capaz de anular el determinante papel que el otro juega en nuestra supervivencia, en nuestra vida personal, en nuestro desarrollo ontogenético, en nuestra salud física y mental, en una palabra. Para decirlo pronto y claro: la psicología se ha hecho grande al escribir el gran capítulo sobre la incurable otredad que padece (que goza y necesita, sería más apropiado) el yo.

En 1801, los inquisidores de Cuenca iniciaban los procesos contra Isabel Herraiz y más de una veintena de sus seguidores. Esta fue la última causa importante juzgada por el tribunal inquisitorial conquense. Dotada de un considerable don de gentes y con gran poder de persuasión, la beata de Villar del Águila logró que muchos creyesen en su virtud y en las maravillas que, según aseguraba, Dios había obrado en su persona. En la transubstanciación del cuerpo de la beata creyeron un convento de frailes franciscanos caso completo, varios canónigos y otros clérigos de reconocido prestigio en Cuenca, junto con multitud de vecinos de Villar del Águila y de los pueblos de su entorno. Asimismo, la iglesia del lugar fue el escenario de los escándalos protagonizados por varias decenas de endemoniadas. La fama creciente de la beata llevó primero al obispo Palafox y después a los ministros del Santo Oficio a tomar cartas en el asunto. La gran cantidad de documentación que se ha conservado nos ha permitido reconstruir lo sucedido.
