A Tale Blazed Through Heaven examines developments in the representation of the classical tale of Mars, Venus, and Vulcan in the literature and painting of the Golden Age of Spain (c.1526-1681). Anchored in close analysis of individual primary texts, the five chapters that comprise this study assess how poets and painters breathed new life into the tale inherited from Homer, Ovid, and others, examining some of the ways in which the story of Mars, Venus, and Vulcan was disguised, developed, expanded, mocked, combined with or played off against different subjects, or otherwise modified in order to pique the interest of successive generations of readers and viewers. Each chapter discusses what particular changes and shifts in emphasis reveal about the tale itself, specific renderings, the aims and intentions of individual poets and painters, and the wider context of the literary and visual culture of Early Modern Spain. Discussing a range of poems by both canonical (Garcilaso de la Vega, Luis de Gongora, Lope de Vega, etc.) and less well-known writers (Juan de la Cueva, Alonso de Castillo Solorzano, Salvador Jacinto Polo de Medina, etc.), and culminating in detailed examination of select mythological works by Philip IV's court painter, Diego Velazquez, this book sheds light on questions relating to aspects of classical reception in the Renaissance, the rise of specific poetic styles (epic, mock-epic, burlesque, etc.), the interplay between the sister arts of poetry and painting, and the continual process of imitation and invention that was one of the defining features of the Spanish Golden Age.

El presente trabajo analiza el impacto literario del mito de Greta Garbo desde una óptica panhispánica. Aborda no sólo su constitución en mito como una unidad de significado organizada por el hecho fílmico y cinematográfico, sino también por la literatura. Se ha dividido en distintos modelos, conformados por aportaciones de las teorías fílmicas y literarias focalizadas en su mayor parte en los procesos de recepción. Aunque se ha mantenido la especificidad de los códigos que forman parte del mito, se trazan convergencias entre ellos al tratarse de una realidad intersemiótica. Para ello, se ofrece un recorrido crítico de los textos desde la estética de la recepción, la semiótica, la narratología, la teoría de los polisistemas y la iconología, además de las teorías de los géneros literarios y cinematográficos. Se constata que el mito, especialmente el que surge en la cultura de masas, exige la proximación comparatista, trasversal e interdiciplinar de los distintos discursos y artes. Ello demuestra la vigencia del mito en la literatura contemporánea.

Recent years have seen a growing interest in undetermined and unqualified urban spaces. Understanding cities as spaces for encounter, conflict and otherness, this book argues that this indeterminacy is not marginal but a key characteristic of urban space, and degrees of liberty foster change, creativity, and political action. The urban void is a conceptual construct that aims to render a principle of absence apprehensible, and to describe how it intervenes in place-making in the city. Seville: Through the Urban Void build mostly upon Henri Lefebvre’s work using concepts drawn on the social sciences, in order to articulate a biographic narrative of the Alameda de Hércules in Seville, Spain, which stands both as an outstanding instance of urban space and a very influential urban type. During its long historical span the Alameda has undergone alternating periods of decline and development, revealing the relations between successive urban paradigms and ideas of nature, territory, and the people. For the first time its whole history is told in a single account, which adds new perspectives to its understanding, and brings forward formerly disregarded aspects. This book shows how its liminal nature, which stubbornly persists over time, creates the conditions for creative processes.
