El conte txekhovià no s’assembla a cap altre. El seu protagonista sol ser un intel·lectual que se sent avorrit i incapaç de fer res de bo i útil, cosa que l’impulsa a filosofar sobre l’absurditat de viure. El narrador observa —des de la distància— els eprsonatges amb un lleu somriure irònic, tot amagant una simpatía i compassió profundes. L’estil és clar, precís i lluminós, ple d’observacions i detalls summament poètics. L’entonació general de Txèkhov és una barreja ben equilibrada d’objectivitat, ironia I tendresa infinita, tot plegat amamrat de tristesa gens sentimental. Però El monjo negre és una mica diferent. El personatge enigmàtic anunciat pel títol és una metáfora d’aquella il·lusió que fa viure l’ésser humà, encarnada en una visió sinistra que al final de la narració destrueix el protagonista desencantat. La historia de Krovin no tracta d’un boig, sinó més aviat d’un il·lús, potser d’un visionari.
