If there is such a thing as essential reading in metaphysics or in philosophy of language, this is it. Ever since the publication of its original version, Naming and Necessity has had great and increasing influence. It redirected philosophical attention to neglected questions of natural and metaphysical necessity and to the connections between these and theories of reference, in particular of naming, and of identity. From a critique of the dominant tendency to assimilate names to descriptions and more generally to treat their reference as a function of their Fregean sense, surprisingly deep and widespread consequences may be drawn. The largely discredited distinction between accidental and essential properties, both of individual things (including people) and of kinds of things, is revived. So is a consequent view of science as what seeks out the essences of natural kinds. Traditional objections to such views are dealt with by sharpening distinctions between epistemic and metaphysical necessity; in particular by the startling admission of necessary a posteriori truths. From these, in particular from identity statements using rigid designators whether of things or of kinds, further remarkable consequences are drawn for the natures of things, of people, and of kinds; strong objections follow, for example to identity versions of materialism as a theory of the mind. This seminal work, to which today's thriving essentialist metaphysics largely owes its impetus, is here published with a substantial new Preface by the author.

"Cuando Kripke diera las conferencias que terminaría por dar paso al Nombrar y la necesidad (1981) un gran revuelo en la tradición analítica se dio a cabo. En estas y a partir de la tesis de la rigidez Kripke lograba hacer dos cosas. En primer lugar, este conseguía hacer una ataque frontal y exitoso al descriptivismo iniciado por Frege y Russell que habían gozado de cierta dominancia durante esos años en el campo de la filosofía del lenguaje. Por otro lado, su idea de los designadores rígidos y como los nombres propios del lenguaje natural, en contravía con Frege y Russell, se solían comportan como designadores rígidos, le permitían mantener una serie de tesis que, a pesar de que fueran controversiales en un inicio, terminaría por constituirse como la posición domínate en la disciplina (Hughes 2004). Bajo las ideas de la rigidez Kripke pudo dar cabida a la posibilidad de enunciados necesario a posteriori. Este ensayo reconstruye la forma en la que Kripke llego a esta conclusión y problematizarla. Pará lograr esto, este ensayo examina las ideas kripkeanas sobre la teoría causal de la referencia y la rigidez. Por otro lado, también veremos ciertos contra ejemplos en especifico la identidad contingente presentada por Gibbard (1975) y la dominancia de un cuerpo de información especifico en la determinación de la intencionalidad pretendida de un nombre propio (Evans 1973). También sostengo que la teoría Kripkeana presenta problemas para resolver errores contextos de creencias (contextos intencionales). Por último, el ensayo muestra como con ciertas modificaciones y poniendo las ideas de Kripke en una teoría semántica de dos niveles, especialmente la propuesta de Chalmers (1996) parece haber una respuesta satisfactoria a estos problemas."--Tomado del Formato de Documento de Grado.
