Con el convencimiento crítico de que sólo desde el ámbito de la cultura argentina, en su historia, en su literatura, en las inflexiones de su lengua, puede empezar a comprenderse la significación profunda de la obra de Jorge Luis Borges, este ensayo analiza diversos aspectos de los once libros publicados por el escritor argentino entre 1923 y 1942. Se trata de la parte de su obra menos difundida y estudiada, debido a la voluntad inquebrantable de Borges de no reeditar sus tres primeros libros de ensayos, así como al incesante proceso de supresiones y modificaciones en su poesía. Este trabajo pretende complementar la imagen parcial y fragmentaria de la crítica que define a Borges exclusivamente como un escritor “cosmopolita”, sin nexos significativos con su propia realidad histórica y cultural que puedan rastrearse en sus textos. Por el contrario, aquí se postula que la reconocida “universalidad” del autor sólo fue posible a partir de sus múltiples relaciones con la cultura rioplatense. Desde una perspectiva que desea mostrar el proceso evolutivo de la literatura de Borges, Olea Franco afirma que la riqueza del escritor maduro tiene sus orígenes en este periodo, pues sin sus primeras experimentaciones literarias, no hubiera sido posible que Borges alcanzara ese estilo conciso y polisémico que tanto fascina al lector actual.

It is well known that Jorge Luis Borges was a translator, but this has been considered a curious minor aspect of his literary achievement. Few have been aware of the number of texts he translated, the importance he attached to this activity, or the extent to which the translated works inform his own stories and poems. Between the age of ten, when he translated Oscar Wilde, and the end of his life, when he prepared a Spanish version of the Prose Edda , Borges transformed the work of Poe, Kafka, Hesse, Kipling, Melville, Gide, Faulkner, Whitman, Woolf, Chesterton, and many others. In a multitude of essays, lectures, and interviews Borges analyzed the versions of others and developed an engaging view about translation. He held that a translation can improve an original, that contradictory renderings of the same work can be equally valid, and that an original can be unfaithful to a translation. Borges's bold habits as translator and his views on translation had a decisive impact on his creative process. Translation is also a recurrent motif in Borges's stories. In "The Immortal," for example, a character who has lived for many centuries regains knowledge of poems he had authored, and almost forgotten, by way of modern translations. Many of Borges's fictions include actual or imagined translations, and some of his most important characters are translators. In "Pierre Menard, author of the Quixote," Borges's character is a respected Symbolist poet, but also a translator, and the narrator insists that Menard's masterpiece-his "invisible work"-adds unsuspected layers of meaning to Cervantes's Don Quixote. George Steiner cites this short story as "the most acute, most concentrated commentary anyone has offered on the business of translation." In an age where many discussions of translation revolve around the dichotomy faithful/unfaithful, this book will surprise and delight even Borges's closest readers and critics.

This book studies how Borges constructs a theory of translation that plays a fundamental role in the development of Argentine literature, and which, in turn, expands the potential for writers in Latin America to create new and innovative literatures through processes of re-reading, rewriting, and mis-translation. The book analyzes Borges's texts in both an Argentine and a transnational context, thus incorporating Borges's ideas into contemporary debates about translation and its relationship to language and aesthetics, Latin American culture and identity, tradition and originality, and center-periphery dichotomies. Furthermore, a central objective of this book is to show that the study of the importance of translation in Borges and of the importance of Borges for translation studies need not be separated. Furthermore, translation studies has much to gain by the inclusion of Latin American thinkers such as Borges, while literary studies has much to gain by in-depth considerations of the role of translation in Latin American literatures.
