Una familia de noble abolengo reside en la ciudad en un viejo palacio del s.XVI, envuelta en el recuerdo de sus hazañas y privilegios pasados, sin percibir que ahora son otros tiempos. El matrimonio tiene dos hijos gemelos, los cuales, según la tradición, dedicarán, el mayor, a las armas; y el segundo, a la Iglesia, Obispo o semejante. En esta tesitura y aspiraciones les sorprende la Guerra Civil y los dos hijos, ya muchachos, con la carrera de Derecho terminada, se incorporan al Alzamiento militar entrando en el Cuartel de la Guardia Civil, donde el Alzamiento es aplastado con un gran rosario de muertos, entre lo cuales está el hijo mayor, don Ciprianín, como era conocido vulgarmente. El hermano logra escapar a la zona nacional, en donde se suma al Ejército. Previamente a estos hechos el hermano mayor, cojo, se ha casado con una menuda, de la que tiene un hijo. Y al quedarse viuda, un miliciano que estaba enamorado de ella, consigue casarse con ella, mientras el niño lo dejan al cuidado de una antigua criada. Termina la guerra, el miliciano y su mujer huyen a Francia. Y vuelve el otro hermano victorioso que se hace cargo del huérfano. Y vuelven también los huidos a Francia que, por derecho del hijo anterior, se instalan en parte del Palacio; en la otra mitad el hermano gemelo triunfador que se enamora de la cuñada....Y el hijo que prepara la venganza de su padre a imitación de Hamlet.
