Esta obra tiene como objetivo realizar una aproximación a las formas de explotación de los recursos naturales en los territorios de las ciudades romanas situadas en la provincia de Alicante: Dianium, Lucentum, Ilici y La Vila Joiosa mediante el análisis del poblamiento rural y de las características que definen su espacio productivo. Para ello se ha elaborado un exhaustivo corpus donde los asentamientos rurales aparecen localizados en su contexto geográfico e histórico, con las referencias bibliográficas actualizadas y últimas interpretaciones. Asimismo, se lleva a cabo un análisis de las actividades productivas y los modos de poblamiento desarrollados en estas ciudades desde el siglo II a.C. hasta el VII d.C. Este estudio supondrá una útil herramienta de trabajo para posteriores investigaciones sobre la arqueología rural romana del sur de la Tarraconense, además de permitir el avance en la investigación a partir de las hipótesis de trabajo propuestas. Carolina Frías Castillejo (Madrid, 1977) es licenciada con grado en Historia por la Universidad de Alicante. En la actualidad forma parte del equipo de investigación de la Villa de Rufio (Giano dell'Umbria, Italia) y del proyecto de excavación y puesta en valor de la Villa Romana de l'Albir (l'Alfàs del Pi, Alicante).

This volume explores the effects of Greek presence in the Iberian Peninsula, and how this Iberian Greek experience evolved in resonance with its neighbouring region, the Mediterranean West. Contributions cover the Phocaean settlement at Emporion and its relationship with the indigenous hinterland, the government of the Greek communities, Greek settlement and trade at Málaga, the Greek settlement of Santa Pola, Greek trade in Southern France and Eastern Spain, the implications of imported Attic pottery in the fifth and fourth centuries BC and the conception of Iberia in the eyes of the Greeks. The Iberian Peninsula invites discussion of key notions of ethnic identity, the use of code-switching, cultural geography and the role of society in generating, developing and exploiting social memory in a changing world. The contributions in this volume provide a variety of responses and interpretations of the Greek presence, reflecting the extent of this debate and offering different approaches in order to better understand the range of evidence from the Iberian Peninsula. Este volumen recoge los resultados de un estudio integral de los componentes del paisaje romano en algunas comarcas meridionales de la Provincia Tarraconense. Para llevarlo a cabo, hemos diseñado un conjunto de líneas de trabajo que nos han permitido avanzar en el conocimiento de los agrosistemas romanos que van más allá de los sistemas centuriados; estudiar los modelos de explotación del campo a partir de prácticas de carácter intensivo ligadas a asentamientos campesinos diversos de las villas rurales; confirmar las dificultades para afirmar el supuesto carácter hegemónico de los modelos de agricultura basados en manos de obra servil, predominantes solo en la Italia tardorrepublicana; analizar los modos de concentración y gestión de excedentes a pequeña escala, las redes de intercambio regional y su papel en las estructuras comerciales de carácter suprarregional; o investigar los patrones de poblamiento para identificar correlaciones significativas entre distribución y densidad en varias escalas de análisis, más allá de los centros urbanos. El marco geográfico se centra especialmente en los territoria romanos de las antiguas Saetabis, Dianium y Alone, en las comarcas centro-meridionales valencianas. En concreto, tratamos en cada capítulo los métodos, estrategias de análisis y principales resultados de la investigación llevada a cabo en varios paisajes romanos rurales periféricos (Ull de Canals en Banyeres de Mariola o Les Hortes Sud en Ibi) y periurbanos (Els Ecles-La Rana en Gata de Gorgos y Les Hortes en Xaló) del norte de la provincia de Alicante.

El espacio construido constituye un escenario social privilegiado, un medio de expresión y transmisión de conductas y comportamientos sociales, que interesa por igual a antropólogos, historiadores, arqueólogos y arquitectos, con sus específicas herramientas para el análisis social de la domesticidad. Esa preocupación común permite superar los ámbitos disciplinares estancos y transcender el corsé de la periodización histórica, sin olvidar la casuística particular de las relaciones entre los entornos construidos y la estructura social que los concibe y ejecuta a través de expresiones arquitectónicas concretas. Este volumen colectivo surge como una “casa común” en la que habita la necesidad de dotar de contenidos sociales los espacios que analizamos desde la arqueología en un amplio espectro cronológico y temático. Recoge veintiún trabajos que transitan por el espacio social desde la Prehistoria hasta los tiempos modernos, en singular y en plural, en femenino y en masculino, a través de voces y perspectivas procedentes de diversos lugares del ámbito mediterráneo. Las diversas aportaciones pivotan en torno a dos perspectivas fundamentales: las visiones diacrónicas del uso social del espacio y las lecturas antropológicas y disciplinares de la domesticidad y los espacios sociales. De un lado, la perspectiva diacrónica organiza las aportaciones de este volumen. De otro, los temas transversales de lectura social, patrones de comportamiento en las formas de habitar y su entrelazamiento con pautas económicas, políticas o rituales, permiten un fructífero diálogo entre posiciones teóricas, aproximaciones formales y épocas distintas. En este sentido, la experiencia multidisciplinar y multidimensional de lectura transversal de espacios sociales distintos, aplicando semejantes herramientas y metodologías de análisis espacial, permite reconocer patrones de racionalidad comunes o al menos comparables, entre sociedades muy alejadas en tiempo y características.

This volume aims to present an updated portrait of the Roman countryside in Roman Spain by the comparison of different theoretical orientations and methodological strategies including the discussion of textual and iconographic sources and the analysis of the faunal remains. The archaeology of rural areas of the Roman world has traditionally been focused on the study of villae, both as an architectural model of Roman otium and as the central core of an economic system based on the extensive agricultural exploitation of latifundia. The assimilation of most rural settlements in provincial areas of the Roman Empire with the villa model implies the acceptance of specific ideas, such as the generalization of the slave mode of production, the rupture of the productive capacity of Late Iron Age communities, or the reduction in importance of free peasant labor in the Roman economy of most rural areas. However, in recent decades, as a consequence of the generalized extension of preventive or emergency archaeology and survey projects in most areas of the ancient territories of the Roman Empire, this traditional conception of the Roman countryside articulated around monumental villae is undergoing a thorough revision. New research projects are changing our current perception of the countryside of most parts of the Roman provincial world by assessing the importance of different types of rural settlements. In the last years, we have witnessed the publication of archaeological reports on the excavation of thousands of small rural sites, farms, farmsteads, enclosures, rural agglomerations of diverse nature, etc. One of the main consequences of all this research activity is a vigorous discussion of the paradigm of the slave mode of production as the basis of Roman rural economies in many provincial areas. A similar change in the paradigm is taking place, with some delay, in the archaeology of Roman Spain. After decades of preventive/emergency interventions there is a considerable quantity of unpublished data on this kind of rural settlements. However, unlike the cases of Roman Britain or Gallia Comata, no synthesis or national projects are undertaking the task of systematizing all these data. With the intention of addressing this current situation the present volume discusses the results and methodological strategies of different projects studying peasant settlements in several regions of Roman Spain.
