El Príncipe don Carlos (1545-1568) fue el primogénito de Felipe II (1527-1598). Nació con importantes deficiencias físicas y psíquicas, puestas de manifiesto a lo largo de su desarrollo. Víctima de graves enfermedades y un doloroso accidente, al pasar de la adolescencia a la juventud, a sus iniciales dificultades se añadió un carácter errático y violento. A consecuencia del mismo, cayó el hijo en la desesperación y el padre se vio obligado a admitir una minusvalía hasta entonces ignorada. Tomó la solución habitual de los Habsburgo con sus enfermos mentales: lo recluyó en prisión. En la misma enfermó de nuevo y murió. El escándalo desatado en toda Europa se convirtió, en manos de los enemigos del Rey Prudente, en uno de los elementos angulares de su leyenda negra. Si la Historia nos habla de una persona discapacitada física e intelectualmente, la leyenda lo convirtió en un joven hermoso, en tratos amorosos con su madrastra, Isabel de Valois (1545-1568) y paladín de la libertad, asesinado por el Demonio del Mediterráneo, su padre. Esta biografía, además de distinguir claramente entre lo histórico y lo legendario, utiliza la Historia de la Ciencia, la Medicina, la Terapéutica y la Nutrición, para hacer comprensible en nuestros días la manera de pensar y actuar, en el siglo XVI, con respecto a estas materias y al Príncipe.
