A través del relato del Arqueólogo, que se intercala en la narración con fragmentos de su diario y de los informes que escribe tras un período de convivencia con los mulai, los lectores se adentran en la historia de una civilización surgida por accidente, fruto de una misión espacial que cayó en el olvido. Los mulai no sólo han conseguido sobrevivir y perpetuarse en unas condiciones climáticas extremas, sometidos a unas estaciones imprevisibles, sino que han desarrollado una forma de relacionarse que tiene algunas características de lo más inspiradoras: cada individuo trabaja cuando y en lo que quiere, no hay jerarquías sociales, no existe la propiedad y siempre se agrupan de tres en tres. El dios al que rezan, Dog, sólo puede ser objeto de agradecimiento, nunca de súplica, y el cierre de sus oraciones siempre es ternario: «El árbol viene, el árbol viene, el árbol viene», para ellos, el vago recuerdo de una tierra frondosa funciona como el de un paraíso perdido. Al igual que los grandes clásicos del género, y valiéndose de saberes tan diversos como la lingüística o la filosofía, Hachemi se aproxima a nuestras preocupaciones más acuciantes –la emergencia ecológica que nos acecha, los desmanes de unas dinámicas de consumo que condicionan casi todas las facetas del ser humano– a bordo de un artefacto lúdico, poético y de imaginación desbordante que nos obliga a observar el mundo que habitamos con ojos nuevos.
