Tal vez la característica que haga del realismo mágico una narrativa tan acogida es su cualidad transgresora, que se insinúa en el término mismo. El oxímoron ‘realismo mágico’ revela que las categorías de lo mágico y lo real se cuestionan por su yuxtaposición. Si se presenta lo mágico como parte de la realidad cotidiana, entonces se erosiona lo que es mágico y lo que es real; de igual modo, al alternar entre lo real y lo mágico. En este sentido, lo mágico permanece identificable como mágico y real como real, pero, a diferencia de la narrativa realista canónica, se le otorga el mismo tratamiento de seriedad. Al tener que aceptar lo real o lo mágico como las versiones de los hechos, estas se socaban continuamente por la existencia de la otra versión. La raíz de la transgresión / subversión reside en que, al cuestionar la categoría de verdad y quebrar la de lo real, los límites de otras categorías se vuelven vulnerables. La categoría de lo real no queda definida y, por consiguiente, las suposiciones de verdad están en juego. El poder transgresor del realismo mágico provee el medio de socavar la noción de una determinada verdad científica y lógica, quebrando la noción de una verdad única absoluta y dando una versión multidimensional de la realidad. Este estudio se encamina a explorar esta narrativa en la indeleble impronta de la literatura latinoamericana.
