Beginning in the late 1950s political leaders in Venezuela built what they celebrated as Latin America’s most stable democracy. But outside the staid halls of power, in the gritty barrios of a rapidly urbanizing country, another politics was rising—unruly, contentious, and clamoring for inclusion. Based on years of archival and ethnographic research in Venezuela’s largest public housing community, Barrio Rising delivers the first in-depth history of urban popular politics before the Bolivarian Revolution, providing crucial context for understanding the democracy that emerged during the presidency of Hugo Chávez. In the mid-1950s, a military government bent on modernizing Venezuela razed dozens of slums in the heart of the capital Caracas, replacing them with massive buildings to house the city’s working poor. The project remained unfinished when the dictatorship fell on January 23, 1958, and in a matter of days city residents illegally occupied thousands of apartments, squatted on green spaces, and renamed the neighborhood to honor the emerging democracy: the 23 de Enero (January 23). During the next thirty years, through eviction efforts, guerrilla conflict, state violence, internal strife, and official neglect, inhabitants of el veintitrés learned to use their strategic location and symbolic tie to the promise of democracy in order to demand a better life. Granting legitimacy to the state through the vote but protesting its failings with violent street actions when necessary, they laid the foundation for an expansive understanding of democracy—both radical and electoral—whose features still resonate today. Blending rich narrative accounts with incisive analyses of urban space, politics, and everyday life, Barrio Rising offers a sweeping reinterpretation of modern Venezuelan history as seen not by its leaders but by residents of one of the country’s most distinctive popular neighborhoods.

Ireneo de Lyon [126-190] es el teólogo más importante del siglo II, y probablemente después el que más influyó en la teología de la Iglesia Primitiva después de Pablo. Nacido probablemente en Esmirna (Asia Menor), su familiaridad con Policarpo [70-155], obispo y mártir de la ciudad, que mantuvo una relación personal con el apóstol Juan, le convierte en un importantísimo eslabón en la tradición apostólica. Habiéndose trasladado a las Galias (Francia) por razones que se ignoran, fue elegido obispo en la ciudad de Lyon. Aunque el historiador Eusebio de Cesarea [267-338] nos habla de un buen número de obras escritas por Ireneo, de las que transcribe algunos fragmentos, solo se han conservado dos: Elenjos kai anatrope tes pseudonímon gnóseos (Desenmascaramiento y refutación dela falsa gnosis conocido como "Contra las herejías"), y Epídeixis ou apostolikon kerigmatos (Demostración de la enseñanza apostólica). Curiosamente la polémica abierta con los gnósticos en tiempos de Ireneo y refutada por él en Contra las herejías, ha vuelto a resurgir en el siglo xxi con mucha intensidad. El hallazgo en Egipto de una versión copta de uno de los textos gnósticos desaparecidos y del que solo se tenía noticia por las citas y condenas que del mismo hace el propio Ireneo en su obra, ha desencadenado de nuevo la polémica. Nos referimos al llamado Evangelio de Judas, un texto apócrifo del siglo ii, que Ireneo atribuye a la secta gnóstica de los cainítos, y cuyo hallazgo ha causado no poca confusión a muchas personas no expertas en la materia. Por tanto, nueva lectura de Contra las herejías, es imprescindible para todos aquellos deseosos de conocer la verdad sobre este tema y leer lo que sobre el tal Evangelio de Judas opinaban ya Ireneo y los cristianos de la Iglesia Primitiva. El presente volumen de la colección PATRÍSTICA incluye las obras completas de Ireneo de Lyon [126-190]: Contra las herejías, y también Demostración de la enseñanza apostólica, una breve exposición apologética de la enseñanza apostólica.
