Casanova was in his fifty-third year. Though no longer driven by the lust of adventure that had spurred him in his youth, he was still hunted athwart the world, hunted now by a restlessness due to the approach of old age. His yearning for Venice, the city of his birth, grew so intense that, like a wounded bird slowly circling downwards in its death flight, he began to move in ever-narrowing circles. Again and again, during the last ten years of his exile, he had implored the Supreme Council for leave to return home. Erstwhile, in the drafting of these petitions - a work in which he was a past master - a defiant, wilful spirit seemed to have guided his pen; at times even he appeared to take a grim delight in his forwardness. But of late his requests had been couched in humble, beseeching words which displayed, ever more plainly, the ache of homesickness and genuine repentance.

Casanova withdrew his kerchief filled with the gold pieces from beneath the bolster, and emptied the money on the table. He counted the coins under Lorenzi's eyes--a process which was soon over, for many of the gold pieces were worth several ducats each. Putting the stipulated sum into two purses, he handed these to Lorenzi. This left about a hundred ducats for himself. Lorenzi stuffed the purses into his tail-pockets, and was about to leave, still silent.

The ageing Casanova, struggling in vain to regain his youth; a beautiful young Viennese socialite, compelled to sell her honour in order to save her family from disgrace; a disdainful lieutenant, driven to the edge by his compulsive gambling -- such are the characters we encounter here, all of them Schnitzler types who appear again and again, infinitely varied and delicately nuanced, throughout the author's dramas and prose works. A physician by training, Schnitzler was essentially interested only in cases involving nervous and mental disorders; he practiced medicine half-heartedly for a few years before turning exclusively to writing, and it was here that he delved deeply into the psyches of his characters and laid bare their innermost fears and desires. His contemporary Sigmund Freud recognised in Schnitzler's work an approach to the understanding of the human mind so strikingly similar to his own that he considered the writer his virtual Doppelgänger.

ENGLISH DESCRIPTION "'Adventure, love, politics: an 18th century narration told in Strukul's quick-paced style, with a sudden violence in which the State is also a protagonist and with the art of Venice in the background.' Il Mattino Venice, 1755. After ten long years traveling through Europe, Giacomo Casanova finally returns to his native city and to that which his heart has always belonged. But the city is suffering in the middle of violence and misery, far from it's past glory. The return of its most rebellious youth becomes a big event, and acclaimed by its inhabitants, Casanova doesn't waste any occasion to get the attention of the nobles and aristocrats. Very soon, the Austrian countess Margareth von Steinberg throws him a challenge: seduce the very young Francesca Erizzo before she gets married. A challenge the famous seducer accepts without foreseeing the feelings that the young Francesca will awaken in him, or the danger that's hidden behind this apparent courtly game. Because the high levels of society have only one goal: end Casanova before he becomes a real threat the interests of the Republic of Venice."

One morning he went out for a walk beyond the town limits to excogitate the final touches for some sentences that were to annihilate the infidel Frenchman. Suddenly he fell prey to a disquiet that almost amounted to physical distress. He turned over in his mind the life he had been leading for the last three months. It had grown wearisomely familiar—the morning walks into the country, the evenings spent in gambling for petty stakes with the reputed Baron Perotti and the latter’s pock-marked mistress. He thought of the affection lavished upon himself by his hostess, a woman ardent but no longer young. He thought of how he had passed his time over the writings of Voltaire and over the composition of an audacious rejoinder which until that moment had seemed to him by no means inadequate. Yet now, in the dulcet atmosphere of a morning in late summer, all these things appeared stupid and repulsive.
