The story that unfolds in Memorias del Sanatorio has its beginnings in the mental vortex that engulfs Arnaldo Morales after the suicide of his father. There is no possible resurrection after that fact,and our main character is hospitalized in a quirky mental sanatorioum in Spain, where the sons and daughters of well to do in Latin American families, as well as of the Spanish bourgeois, are hospitalized with the hope of some miraculous cure of their mental illness from which they will continue to suffer in the clinic, year after year, in the hallways and the rooms of the Esquerdo The characters that inhabit these halls of the asylum are markedly interesting in their contorted psychologies, in their delusional systems, in the inventions of the imaginations that lead them somewhere that they do not remotely expect: the end of their shadows past the gray walls, the corridors they follow going nowhere through the center of the despair of their schizophrenias: the end of their delusions that do not provide with a way out. The writer has gotten his material for the novel from his own experience as he walked these corridors, and the streets that appear in the narrative; and of course from the experience of mental illness. One more important aspect of the narrative: The narrator find himself in the streets of Miami Beach throughout the novel, from where he recollects the thirty years past when the remembrances from the sanatorium took place. The world is going to end, like it happens in the end of every millennium, and a new imperator comes to MB to witnesses the executions of the insane.

El universo fotográfico construido por el explorador europeo, que consta de varios cientos de fotografías, constituye una valiosa, original e irrepetible memoria histórica y etnográfica que debe hacer parte del patrimonio fotográfico y cultural colombiano. Se trata de una obra fotográfica pionera ya que dentro de la historia de la fotografía en Colombia puesta al servicio de la antropología, sólo le antecede el trabajo del etnógrafo alemán Theodor KochGrünberg entre los años de 19031905, quien nos dejó un valioso registro fotográfico de algunos grupos indígenas del Miritiparaná Apaporis. Décadas después, durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial, el ilustre Botánico Richard Evans Schultes inició sus investigaciones y logró otros de los más reconocidos registros fotográficos, en particular sobre la selva amazónica colombiana. Desde mediados del siglo XX, el muy célebre investigador Gerardo Reichel Dolmatoff inició otra de las más monumentales obras fotográficas que hoy se conserva gracias a la Biblioteca Luis Ángel Arango. Es pertinente llamar la atención, entonces, acerca de la temporalidad y el contexto de este importante y singular registro fotográfico producido por Battista Venturello, pues se trata de una de las épocas más decisivas en cuanto a la suerte de las poblaciones indígenas existentes en las últimas fronteras de la llamada, “civilización”…En otras palabras, el nuevo auge de la pesquería de perlas en la Guajira, el primer apogeo cauchero en la Amazonía, el crecimiento de las exploraciones y de la explotación del petróleo en la Motilona, el auge de la exportación de la fauna y de las pieles de animales silvestres, el resurgimiento de la explotación aurífera y forestal, los extensos movimientos de colonización agrícola y el avance de la colonización ganadera en territorios indígenas, además del regreso de las misiones católicas, especialmente de capuchinos y monfortianos, marcaron esa época durante la cual creció el asedio, el desplazamiento y el exterminio de muchos de los grupos indígenas que habían logrado sobrevivir a la evangelización, integración, persecución y aniquilamiento de los tiempos coloniales.
