Enclavado entre agrestes montañas se encuentra el Reino del Olvido, en esas montañas las historias cuentan que residían los Dioses pero ahora ese recuerdo no llega más que a la categoría de leyenda. Las gentes de este pueblo eligieron vivir de espaldas al mundo conocido, debido a su ubicación al lado de la morada de los dioses los habitantes de ese reino y de los alrededores eran dotados de unos poderes especiales que no solían ser comprendidos por el resto de las personas. Este reino se encontraba rodeado por el temible Bosque Negro, donde habitaban en su interior criaturas horrendas que es mejor no nombrar, las gentes del reino hacían incursiones frecuentes en ese oscuro bosque, ya que, dichas criaturas solían entrar en las fronteras del Reino del Olvido. siempre solía haber gente por los bosques para alejar la soledad y el mal que estaba siempre tan presente por aquellos lares. Los pastores de ese reino recorrían los alrededores, se internaban en la Cordillera de las Nubes, la morada de los dioses, atravesaban el Bosque Negro en busca de esos pastos tan apreciados que producían una leche maravillosa que revitalizaba el alma. Los pastos bebían del maná de los dioses y un trago de aquella leche era vital en aquellos territorios inhóspitos no recomendados ni para el más valiente de los guerreros ni para el más poderoso de los hechiceros. Las historias de esos pastores eran conocidas de un lado a otro del mundo conocido, se contaban a los niños en su más tierna infancia para que se fueran a acostar, nadie pensaba que fueran verdad eran leyendas, cuentos para niños. Esos pastores eran conocidos como los Guardianes del Bosque y su misión era proteger el descanso de la gente cuando las sombras se adueñaban del mundo y el mal lo recorría de punta a punta, solo ellos se atrevían a salir, a recorrer la noche, a dar luz a los corazones de la gente que se arrebujaba entre sus mantas cuando el miedo salía de patrulla. While Latin American poets such as Pablo Neruda, Jorge Luis Borges, and Octacio Paz have been receiving most of the attention of critics, the Ecuadorian poet Jorge Carrera Andrade had quietly continued writing his "transparent" poetry. Nevertheless, Carrera Andrade's poems are undoubtedly some of the best ever written in the Spanish language, and he has often been mentioned as a likely candidate for the Nobel Prize. In his poetic exploration of what he calls "the secret country of human existence," Carrera Andrade marvels at the beauty of the world. And this wonder is conveyed by means of dazzling, descriptive metaphors. Perhaps it could be said that the Ecuadorian poet always interprets the world visually, but his visual images constitute merely a metaphorical technique, around which he constructs his poems. In his verbal structures he expresses the transitory nature of life as well as the loneliness of man in the universe. He describes life in his native Ecuador, contemplates with compassion the plight of the Indians of his country, and denounces social injustices. More recently Carrera Andrade, concerned about the destiny of mankind, manifests his indomitable faith in humanity in the book Hombre planetario (1959), imagining a social utopia. Carrera Andrade has stated that his poetry is the result of "the intimate union of the senses and the intellect." And yet his poems remain "transparent." He rejects obscurity and complexity and chooses simplicity and clarity. He considers that "one of the essential goals of poetry is communion with other men" and that if his poetry cannot communicate "its emotive and sensorial content, it fails to accomplish its mission, which is the interpretation of the world." As to the universal meaning of his poetic work, Carrera Andrade would recall Goethe's phrase: "All my works are fragments of a great confession." He would characterize his own work as a confession of love both for humanity and for the wonders of this world. Carrera Andrade must be counted among the four or five best contemporary poets of Latin America. Whether he is awarded a Nobel Prize still remains to be seen, but there can be no doubt that in his poems one can detect the same literary excellence as in the work of Neruda, Paz, or Borges. Hopefully the work of this great Ecuadorian poet will soon be universally appreciated. In some of his works he can be compared to T. S. Eliot, Hölderlin, or Saint-Jean Perse. The publication of H. R. Hayes' translations will, for the first time, make available to English-speaking readers all of the significant verse of Carrera Andrade, beginning with some of his first pieces from La guirnalda del silencio (1926) and ending with translations from Posía última (1957 -1966).

This book uses the reflection of academics specialized in the urban area of Latin America, Europe and the United States, to initiate a comparative debate of the different dynamics in which Urbicidio expresses itself. The field or focal point of analysis that this publication approaches is the city, but under a new critical perspective of inverse methodology to that has been traditional used. It is about understanding the structural causes of self-destruction to finally thinking better and then going from pessimism to optimism. It is a deep look at the city from an unconventional entrance, because it is about knowing and analyzing what the city loses by the action deployed by own urbanites, both in the field of its production and in the field of its consumption. This suppose that the city does not have an ascending linear sequential evolution in its development but neither in each of its parts in the improvement process, showing the face that commonly not seen but others live. The category used for this purpose is that of Urbicidio or the death of the city, which contributes theoretically and methodologically to the knowledge of the city, as well as to the design of urban policies that neutralize it. In addition, it is worth mentioning that the book has an inclusive view of the authors. For this reason, gender parity, territorial representation and the presence of age groups have been sought.
