La Alta Asia, cuyo núcleo central es la gran meseta Tibetana, constituye una entidad biogeográfica capital, ya que en ella se origina la más extensa red fluvial de nuestro mundo. Hace miles de años, este territorio inmenso y único fue colonizado por pueblos que para subsistir tuvieron que seguir a unos seres peludos en sus migraciones naturales, pues con ellos conseguían los medios para alimentarse, calentarse y guarecerse. De esta forma, el Tibet se convirtió en un espacio bio-cultural que siguió conservando su esencia, y así continuó beneficiando a millones y millones de habitantes de las tierras bajas circundantes durante siglos. Con tiempo, esa simbiosis entre seres humanos y animales fue conformando un sistema pastoril que hoy es connatural a su paisaje. Entre tanto, los habitantes de las ciudades, acostumbrados a transformar su entorno, empezaron a llegar a las tierras altas merced a sus avances tecnológicos. Confundiendo sofisticación con sabiduría diseñaron diferentes tácticas para sacar aún más beneficio de ese nuevo lugar, creyéndose mejores que sus habitantes nativos, que llevaban allí viviendo durante muchas generaciones. Aún hoy, con el cambio climático como seria amenaza, los nómadas del Tibet siguen sin ser tenidos en cuenta, y en contra mismo de la evidencia científica, considerados un obstáculo para el desarrollo del país.
