Descripción / Resumen (Español / Castellano): En 1923, las autoridades primorriveristas deciden esconder el cinturón de miseria que rodea la ciudad a los futuros visitantes de la Exposición Iberoamericana del 29. Más de treinta asentamientos chabolistas son desalojados y sus pobladores enviados a Villalatas, la zona más alejada de cualquier ruta de paso. En aquel lugar, un arrabal sin iglesias donde los niños mueren de miseria y el único consuelo de sus madres es poder disponer del recuerdo fotográfico de un cuerpo inerte, se encuentra desde hace años una fonda que resulta ser el burdel más grande, maloliente y barato de la provincia. El relato es una historia de dos grandes mujeres, Davinia y Che, que comienza en 1882, cuando Cristina Salazar Expósito cumple trece años y las monjas del Hospicio de la Santísima Trinidad le buscan un oficio de sirvienta en aquella fonda. Esa misma noche, Doña Paquita la sentará en una silla de enea en mitad del salón donde se espera, le bajará las bragas hasta los tobillos y la rifará al mejor postor entre la selecta clientela. Años después, será capaz de reinventar el pasado y desvelar el futuro. Bajo la más pura tradición del realismo mágico, El retratista de los niños muertos nos sumerge en un tiempo que transcurre entre la luz decimonónica de las lámparas de queroseno y la modernidad de un mundo recién estrenado por el hada electricidad, trasladándonos a un territorio que el lector sentirá mítico: Villalatas. Nota biográfica (Español / Castellano): Manuel Aparicio Villalba nació en Sevilla una madrugada agosteña de 1964. De familia humilde, compaginó trabajo y estudios de Empresariales en la Universidad de Sevilla y, posteriormente, Máster de Economía en la Universidad de Granada. Su trayectoria profesional ha estado ligada con la Gestión Hospitalaria, siendo durante veinte años directivo en el Hospital Universitario Virgen del Rocío. Su carácter innovador y su compromiso social han posibilitado, entre otros, que liderara proyectos de Cooperación Internacional en el campo de la salud con Mauritania, que fundara el Comité de la Ilusión como grupo pionero en la sanidad pública para mejorar la estancia de los pequeños ingresados; y que fuera impulsor y comisionado en los Certámenes de Cortometraje de Cine de Salud Mental. Su pasión por la literatura comenzó a los diez años, cuando descubrió la poesía a través de un grueso tomo recopilatorio de Antología Literaria. De aquellos años, aún perduran en su memoria incontables poemas que puede recitar de corrido. Con la adolescencia llegó la narrativa y con la primera juventud su pasión por el realismo mágico del cual, según él, ya no quiso ni supo desprenderse. Esta primera novela es heredera de este género pero a diferencia de otras historias su ámbito espacial es tangible. Villalatas existió, aunque ya no se recuerde. A sus calles sin nombres trasladaron a su bisabuela y en sus chabolas sin ventanas, su abuela plantaba geranios en latas de tomate.
