Los libros y comentarios biográficos escritos en diversos idiomas desde una perspectiva cristiana, no cabrían en una biblioteca. Y uno se pregunta ¿cabe añadir algo cosa más? Aunque David ha generado en la historia mucha creatividad artística, tanto visual como literaria, las biografías científicas, sobrias y analíticas sobre su persona no abundan. Se pueden encontrar en castellano obras de corte homilético y espiritual, orientadas a la devoción, pero que no atienden las dificultades históricas, los desafíos éticos y las complejidades teológicas relacionadas con el personaje. Exploran, explican y actualizan algunas facetas gratas de su vida; sin embargo, en referencia al hombre que adultera, y que para encubrir su pecado es capaz de asesinar a un fiel y dedicado aliado y amigo, los estudios no son muchos. No es de extrañar, por tanto, que el doctor Angel Velez, Director de la Escuela de Teología de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, afirme categóricamente: "No hemos tenido acceso, por el momento, a muchos textos que ofrezcan mayor cantidad de datos o hayan trabajado con mayor rigor el número de fuentes en torno a David que esta obra del Dr. Pagán.
