La cajiga aquella era un soberbio ejemplar de su especie: grueso, duro y sano como una peña el tronco, de retorcida veta, como la filástica de un cable; ramas horizontales, rígidas y potentes, con abundantes y entretejidos ramos; bien picadas y casi negras las espesas hojas; luego otras ramas, y más arriba otras, y cuanto más altas más cortas, hasta concluir en débil horquilla, que era la clave de aquella rumorosa y oscilante bóveda. Ordinariamente, la cajiga (roble) es el personaje bravío de la selva montañesa, indómito y desaliñado. Nace donde menos se le espera: entre zarzales, en la grieta de un peñasco, a la orilla del río, en la sierra calva, en la loma del cerro, en el fondo de la cañada... en cualquier parte. Crece con mucha lentitud; y como si la inacción le aburriera, estira y retuerce los brazos, bosteza y se esparranca, y llega a viejo dislocado y con jorobas; y entonces se echa el ropaje a un lado y deja el otro medio desnudo. Jamás se acicala ni se peina; y sólo se muda el vestido viejo, cuando la primavera se le arranca en harapos para adornarle con el nuevo; le nacen zarzas en los pies, supuraciones corrosivas en el tronco, musgo y yesca en los brazos; y se deja invadir por la yedra, que le oprime y le chupa la savia. Esta incuria le cuesta la enfermedad de algún miembro, que, al fin, se le cae seco a pedazos, o se le amputa con el hacha el leñador; y en las cicatrices, donde la madera se convierte en húmedo polvo, queda un seno profundo, y allí crecen el muérdago y el helecho, si no le eligen las abejas por morada para elaborar ricos panales de miel que nadie saborea.

Benito Perez Galdos and the Creative Process was first published in 1954. Minnesota Archive Editions uses digital technology to make long-unavailable books once again accessible, and are published unaltered from the original University of Minnesota Press editions. Most critics would rank Benito Perez Galdos second only to Cervantes among the great novelists of Spain. However, in spite of the esteem in which he is generally held, Galdos has been the subject of relatively few scholarly studies. Professor Pattison, by an analysis of two of Galdos' novels, attempts to reconstruct the creative processes that were involved in the writing of these novels. This is the first time that such a critical approach has been used in the field of Spanish fiction and the resulting study is significant not only to Spanish scholars but to all students of literature seeking further insights into the fascinating and still elusive creative process. Professor Pattison analyzes the novels Gloria, published in 1877, and Marianela,which was published the following year.
