La presente edición, preparada por Carmen Baños y con un prólogo de Gustavo Bueno, es la publicación póstuma de la tesis doctoral del autor, hasta ahora inédita. El libro, compuesto por doce capítulos, se estructura en tres partes. La primera, “crítico metodológica”, se hace imprescindible para poder hacer explícitos los “supuestos” desde los que se abordará el estatuto gnoseológico de la obra de Vico, que atenderá fundamentalmente a dilucidar la “novedad” y tipo de “ciencia” a la que Vico alude con el rótulo Ciencia Nueva. La segunda parte está dedicada a cuestiones gnoseológicas y sus capítulos se distribuyen en dos secciones: una primera sección, en la que las múltiples problemáticas que la obra de Vico suscita se tratan desde el análisis sistemático de la estructura argumentativa de la Scienza Nuova, poniéndose de relieve los criterios “ejercidos” por el propio Vico y analizando el campo fenoménico de los materiales que Vico presenta en la Tabla cronológica que encabeza la Ciencia Nueva. La segunda sección, “Fundamentos gnoseológicos del proyecto intencional de Vico”, examina el principio verum-factum enunciado por Vico en el Liber Metaphisicus y ofrece minuciosos análisis de cómo la novedad del proyecto viquiano estriba en haberse situado en una “ciencia media de la humanidad” a la que puede accederse desde una perspectiva constructivista, donde el hombre “al modo de Dios” se regula en su desarrollo según un mismo principio operatorio, el principio verum-factum. La tercera parte trata de cuestiones ontológicas. Una primera sección, dedicada a la problemática filosófica de la Scienza Nuova, en la que salen al paso cuestiones como la idea de Historia, la idea de Hombre o la de determinar si la Ciencia Nuevaes Antropología filosófica o Filosofía de la Historia, nos sitúa en un plano ontológico desde el cual ya es posible poner en conexión a la Ciencia Nueva con las disciplinas filosóficas estrictas. La última sección, “génesis sistemática de laScienza Nuova”, tras detenidos análisis va dejando ver cómo la fundamentación del Derecho de Vico logra que cristalice definitivamente la Ciencia Nueva, pues tal fundamentación es fundamentación antropológica del Derecho, que Vico “representa” desde un punto de vista histórico asociado a sus “cuatro autores” (Tácito, Platón, Bacon, Grocio). La Antropología filosófica de Vico se puede entender así como reductora de la perspectiva histórica y se resuelve en una “ciencia media de la humanidad” que es fin de esa intención de Ciencia Nueva en la que Vico ha perseverado “representándola” de manera constante. Toda la interpretación global de la obra de Vico, que aquí se nos ofrece, está hecha desde las coordenadas del materialismo filosófico de Gustavo Bueno. Al estudio pormenorizado de su sistema filosófico dedicó Secundino Fernández su vida académica.
