Este volumen ofrece una selección de los ESCRITOS POLÍTICOS más importantes de MAX WEBER, aquellos cuya influencia se ha dejado y se deja aún sentir en las ciencias políticas más allá de los motivos concretos que en su día les dieron origen. El primero de ellos, «Parlamento y gobierno en una Alemania reorganizada. Una crítica política de la burocracia y de los partidos» (1918), se considera el más importante de sus trabajos sobre las deficiencias del sistema político alemán y en él la cuestión central es «cómo salvar los restos de la libertad individual» en el proceso general e inevitable de burocratización de la sociedad moderna. En el segundo, titulado «El socialismo» (1918), Weber examina si este movimiento puede representar una alternativa a los problemas de la economía privada. Por último, en «El presidente del Reich» (1919) Weber expuso sus argumentos en favor de que el presidente del Estado ha de ser elegido directamente por los ciudadanos, y no por la Asamblea Nacional. Dopo aver sottoscritto le famose Idee del 1914, in cui l’Accademia Germanica sposava le tesi espansionistiche della nuova Germania imperiale e federale, ossia il manifesto con cui giustificare l’intervento nella Grande Guerra, Weber accetta nell’estate del 1918 di tenere un corso sulla cattedra di Economia politica all’Università di Vienna. Nella capitale austriaca tiene pure una conferenza, su invito dello Stato Maggiore dell’imperial-regio esercito austro-ungarico, sul tema del socialismo e della Rivoluzione d’Ottobre, dando un’originale interpretazione di quel che sta accadendo in Russia. Sfatando definitivamente il luogo comune che lo voleva come il “Marx della borghesia”, Weber si pone come un pensatore politico liberal-conservatore di una specie ben diversa da quella di stampo anglosassone. Nell’inusitata lezione agli ufficiali di un esercito, Weber riesce a spiegare in modo originale le vicende russe ponendole a confronto con i testi marxiani e le aspettative del movimento socialdemocratico in Occidente.
