This book is a biography of Pueblonuevo del Terrible, a mining town located in Andalusia, Spain. Based on previously unexamined sources, the study paints a fresh portrait of industrial workers and their families in Córdoba province, enriching our understanding of this mostly agricultural region. Previous studies of laboring communities in Spain have identified radical workers, miners among them, as a destabilizing element due to their insurgent protest activity, including lethal violence. This study, by contrast, describes both worker activism and cross-class organizing as constructive, not destructive, and aimed at integration into Spanish society. Economically, the mining zone was dominated by a French company in the Rothschild portfolio. But by running their own city, waging peaceful labor strikes, raising a church, building housing, and honoring their dead, residents turned a quasi-colonial outpost into a pueblo worth defending, and they rallied in defense of the Republic at the outbreak of the Spanish Civil War. In the making of Pueblonuevo del Terrible, Spanish men and women contended with the perils of mine work, the jolts of industrial capitalism, creeping fascism, and civil war. As such, this book tells a village-scale story of global events that defined the twentieth century.

On the eve of the financial crisis, the USA was inhabited by almost 70 percent homeowning households, in comparison to about 45 percent in Germany. Homeownership, Renting and Society presents new evidence showing that this homeownership gap already existed between American and German cities around 1900. Existing explanations based on culture, government housing policy or typical socio-economic factors have difficulties in accounting for these long-term cross-country differences. Using historical case studies on Germany and the USA, the book identifies three institutional domains on the supply-side of the housing market – urban land, housing finance and construction – that set countries on different housing trajectories and subsequently established differences that were hard to reverse in later periods. Further chapters generalize the argument across other OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) countries and extend the explanation to cover historical differences in homeownership ideology and horizontal property institutions. This enlightening volume also puts forward path-dependence theories in housing studies, connects housing with vast urban-history and political-economy literature and offers comprehensive insights about the case of a tenant’s country which contradicts the tendency towards universal homeownership. En la historia del socialismo, la simbología y los rituales han tenido una importancia decisiva como factores de cohesión y de creación de una identidad. Un papel destacado lo ocuparon los mitos de origen, el culto a los fundadores y los ritos en torno a la muerte –o inmortalidad- de los dirigentes emblemáticos. Pablo Iglesias reunió esas tres funciones, lo que contribuyó a su “sacralización”. Desde el instante de su fallecimiento, se convirtió en un mito en la historia del movimiento socialista. A esa conversión coadyuvó el carácter “civil sacralizado” y de Estado que tuvo su sepelio. La “unción religiosa” con que se revistió hasta en sus más mínimos detalles, así como su grandiosidad, convertido en un verdadero duelo nacional, y las “necrolatrías” de naturaleza hagiográfica que se escribieron, cooperaron a su deificación. Estas páginas se ocupan de explicar esa construcción mítica con el fin de perpetuarse en el tiempo, tanto en los espacios públicos -dando su nombre a calles, plazas o centros escolares- como en los privados, especialmente durante la Segunda República, cuando su emblema como símbolo de cohesión se rompió siendo objeto de una clara manipulación por el enfrentamiento de las familias socialistas. Habría que esperar hasta mediados de los años cuarenta, cuando en el exilio se inicia una renovada unidad del partido, para que “el abuelo” volviera a ser el símbolo de todo el movimiento. Una tarea reafirmó su figura como adalid de valores sociales y políticos frente al discurso demonizador que, sobre su persona, promovió el franquismo. Con independencia de los vaivenes políticos y de las relecturas de su legado, el culto a la memoria de Pablo Iglesias ha permanecido vivo, goza de un discurso militante coherente y se ha convertido en uno de los principales elementos constitutivos de la identidad socialista.

Historia del deporte obrero en España pretende dar a conocer la concepción del deporte y las propuestas relacionadas con el mismo y con la actividad física en general que durante el primer tercio del siglo XX llevaron a cabo las organizaciones obreras de clase. Se trata, por tanto, de una obra que, fundamentada en un amplio catálogo de fuentes hemerográficas y archivísticas, muchas de ellas inéditas, analiza el movimiento deportivo obrero desde sus comienzos hasta el final de la guerra civil.Siguiendo una secuencia temporal, el libro estudia las iniciativas socialistas en pro de la educación física infantil y del desarrollo de las colonias escolares de vacaciones, la figura de Juan Almela Meliá como pionero del deporte proletario, los grupos deportivos obreros y sus diferentes secciones –fútbol, excursionismo, alpinismo, atletismo…- y los contactos con la Internacional Deportiva Socialista. Se ocupa también de los planteamientos y realizaciones del anarquismo y del comunismo y de la división que, al socaire de lo que ocurría a nivel internacional, enfrentó a socialistas y comunistas –seguidores, estos últimos, de la Internacional Deportiva Roja- por la dirección del deporte obrero y popular. Un capítulo particularmente interesante en este sentido es el que aborda la lucha por el control de la Federación Cultural Deportiva Obrera, la más importante de todas las plataformas deportivas puestas en pie y que llegará a convertirse en una verdadera organización de masas.Finalmente, se profundiza en las realizaciones que las organizaciones obreras llevaron a cabo durante la guerra civil.
