Propios del soneto desde sus orígenes han sido los temas del amor, el sentimiento afectivo y la introspección filosófica. Los poetas en general han cumplido con esos fines, mas también, en las mejores manos, el soneto presenta joyas de variada temática. Así, por ejemplo, la catedral de Colonia en Juan Lozano y Lozano, o Erasmo de Rotterdam del Maestro Valencia. El propósito antológico ha sido seleccionar los mejores sonetos con criterio exclusivo de calidad literaria y conceptual, a fin de mostrar su trayectoria en los diversos cultores. Como referencia temporal se incluyen ejemplos de las primeras épocas y de comienzos del siglo XXI, que burla burlando desfiguran la forma con intención vanguardista. Entre los muchos libros y archivos consultados sobresalen cuatro obras básicas: La Antología crítica de la poesía colombiana (1874 - 1974) por Andrés Holguín, el volumen XIX de la Historia Extensa de Colombia y Horas de literatura colombiana por Javier Arango Ferrer, y Ajuste de cuentas por Harold Alvarado Tenorio, subtitulado La poesía colombiana del siglo XX, las cuales constituyen resúmenes históricos y antológicos.

El soneto nació en Italia entre 1230 y 1240. Íñigo López de Mendoza, el Marqués de Santillana, lo introdujo en la península ibérica y, así, en la lengua castellana. Casi un siglo después Juan Boscán lo recupera, gracias a su amigo Navaggiero, un italiano que se dio cuenta de la afinidad entre su idioma materno y el castellano. Boscán, entonces, adapta definitivamente el soneto en nuestra lengua, con sencillez y a la vez elevación del lenguaje.
