Acabada la Guerra Fría y con teóricos que proclamaban «el fin de la historia», apareció un nuevo fenómeno que ha marcado el siglo XXI: el terrorismo islamista, que atacaba a Occidente y soñaba con crear un califato trasnacional. Es un tema sobre el que se ha opinado, debatido y escrito hasta la saciedad, pero que sigue envuelto en una nebulosa de paradojas y lugares comunes. Este ensayo intenta analizar y comprender –que no justificar– los motivos que subyacen tras esta inquietante realidad. Considera el autor que estamos, tras dos guerras mundiales, ante la primera guerra global, que ya no es interestatal y cuyo campo de batalla alcanza cualquier parte del mundo. En ella se enfrentan drones –fruto de la obsesión norteamericana por reducir a cero las bajas propias– contra mártires, y la preeminencia de las soluciones militares sobre las políticas no augura nada bueno. Pero para entenderla más allá de los clichés hay que ahondar en sus raíces y motivaciones, explorar aspectos cruciales que demasiadas veces quedan fuera de foco: el peso de la historia, desde la idea del califato hasta Afganistán como uno de los últimos escenarios de la Guerra Fría; cómo y por qué los movimientos de liberación árabes –antiimperialistas, laicos y socializantes– han dado paso al islamismo como ideología aglutinadora; el origen del concepto de martirio y la paradoja de que buena parte de los aspirantes a mártires provengan de Occidente y sean hijos de emigrantes formados en escuelas laicas; las motivaciones políticas que se ocultan bajo la fachada religiosa teñida de épica y sacrificio, y sobre todo el enfrentamiento entre dos concepciones antagónicas de la libertad y de la relación entre el individuo y la comunidad, la de Occidente y la que hay detrás del sueño del califato. Este es un libro que plantea algunas preguntas incómodas para tratar de descubrir las verdaderas claves de un conflicto todavía abierto. Un libro que pone el pensamiento al servicio de la comprensión de la realidad en toda su complejidad.

Papers presented at the Fifteenth International Conference on Patristic Studies held in Oxford 2007 (see also Studia Patristica 44, 46, 47, 48 and 49). The successive sets of Studia Patristica contain papers delivered at the International Conferences on Patristic Studies, which meet for a week once every four years in Oxford; they are held under the aegis of the Theology Faculty of the University. Members of these conferences come from all over the world and most offer papers. These range over the whole field, both East and West, from the second century to a section on the Nachleben of the Fathers. The majority are short papers dealing with some small and manageable point; they raise and sometimes resolve questions about the authenticity of documents, dates of events, and such like, and some unveil new texts. The smaller number of longer papers put such matters into context and indicate wider trends. The whole reflects the state of Patristic scholarship and demonstrates the vigour and popularity of the subject.
