La tradición de fiestas palaciegas de gran espectáculo, establecida bajo los Austrias, siguió después de 1700 en la corte del primero de los Borbones, Felipe V, caracterizada por un nuevo ambiente cultural italianizante. Este volumen documenta con lujo de detalles una serie de producciones montadas en el Coliseo del Buen Retiro bajo los auspicios del Ayuntamiento, entre ellas las de Todo lo vence el amor, de Antonio de Zamora, con música de Antonio de Literes, compuesta para celebrar el nacimiento de Luis I en 1707, Las amazonas de España, por José de Cañizares y el compositor veneciano Giacomo Facco, para el nacimiento del infante don Felipe en1720, y el drama musical Angélica y Medoro, de Zamora, representada ese mismo año con motivo de la boda de don Luis. Además de abundantes datos sobre los actores, el vestuario y los decorados, los documentos esclarecen nuevamente las enrevesadas cuestiones de precedencia y autoridad implicadas en la administration de los festejos y la distribución de las localidades. Edition of documents relating to the court theatre in Madrid in 17c and early 18c. In the first volume of this series N.D. Shergold and J.E. Varey edited legajo 666 of the Sección Administrativa of the Archivo General de Palacio. Edited here are the papers from legajo667, as well as others relatedto court theatre of the seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries. These documents reveal in detail - particularly for the performance of Calderón's Fieras afemina amor in 1673 -the sumptuous staging of such works, with awealth of details on costume. Others focus on the ceremony and protocol of the performances. Most are from the last years of Philip IV and Charles II, but there is also documentation on the first decade of the eighteenth century, showing the influence of Italian theatre on the Spanish court. Durante el Antiguo Régimen era frecuente que el monarca invitase a los embajadores a participar en celebraciones teatrales que festejaban bodas reales, nacimientos, tratados de paz e importantes victorias militares. Estas representaciones pronto se convertirian en instrumentos de la maquinaria diplomática española para proyectar una imagen de fortaleza militar y económica ante sus rivales y aliados. De esta manera, se llevarán a cabo grandes desembolsos económicos y complicadas operaciones internacionales para atraer a Madrid a los mejores ingenieros, compositores, instrumentistas, libretos y –más adelante– también cantantes italianos. El objetivo era, naturalmente, deslumbrar a Europa con la imagen de una Monarquía aún vigorosa y pujante a pesar de su progresiva pérdida de influencia internacional. El presente volumen estudia el uso diplomático y propagandístico del teatro protocolario que se representó en el Coliseo del Buen Retiro desde su construcción, en 1640, hasta el fallecimiento de Felipe V, en 1746.

"Sonidos Negros traces how, in the span between 1492--the year in which Christian reconquest of the Iberian Peninsula coincided with Christopher Columbus's landing on Hispaniola--and 1933--when Andalusian poet Federico García Lorca published his 'Theory and Play of the Duende'--the Moor became Black, and how the imagined Gitano ("Gypsy," or Roma) embodies the warring images and sounds of this process. By the nineteenth-century nadir of its colonial reach, Spanish identity came to be enacted in terms of a minstrelized Gitano, a hybrid of American and Spanish representations of Blackness. The imagined Gypsy about which flamenco imagery turns dances on a knife's edge delineating Black and White worlds. Teetering between ostentatious and damning confusion and the humility of epiphany, this figure relates to an earlier Spanish trope: the pastor bobo (foolish shepherd), who, seeing an angelic apparition, must decide whether to accept the light of Christ--or remain in darkness. Spain's symbolic linkage of this religious peril with the Blackness of enslavement constitutes the evangelical narrative which vanquished the Moors and enslaved the Americas, an ideological framework that would be deployed by all the colonial slaving powers. The bobo's precarious state of confusion, appealingly comic but also holding the pathos of the ultimate stakes of his decision--heaven or hell, safety or extermination--opens up a teeming view of the embodied politics of colonial exploitation and creole identity formation. Flamenco's Sonidos Negros live in this eternal moment of bulla, the confusion and ruckus that protect embodied resistance to subjugation, the lament for what has been lost, and the values and aspirations of those rendered imperceptible by enslavement and colonization"--
