A New History Of Spanish Literature written by Richard E. Chandler and has been published by LSU Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 1991-09-01 with Literary Criticism categories.

First published in 1961, A New History of Spanish Literature has been a much-used resource for generations of students. The book has now been completely revised and updated to include extensive discussion of Spanish literature of the past thirty years. Richard E. Chandler and Kessel Schwartz, both longtime students of the literature, write authoritatively about every Spanish literary work of consequence. From the earliest extant writings though the literature of the 1980s, they draw on the latest scholarship. Unlike most literary histories, this one treats each genre fully in its own section, thus making it easy for the reader to follow the development of poetry, the drama, the novel, other prose fiction, and nonfiction prose. Students of the first edition have found this method particularly useful. However, this approach does not preclude study of the literature by period. A full index easily enables the reader to find all references to any individual author or book. Another noteworthy feature of the book, and one omitted from many books of this kind, is the comprehensive attention the authors accord nonfiction prose, including, for example, essays, philosophy, literary criticism, politics, and historiography. Encyclopedic in scope yet concise and eminently readable, the revised edition of A New History of Spanish Literature bids fair to be the standard reference well into the next century.

Goddess of the Americas is a brilliant essay collection and an impassioned, unorthodox celebration of the Virgin of Guadalupe: mother goddess, patron saint of Mexico, protector of the downtrodden, who made her first appearance on American soil in 1531. Through a variety of forms -- original essays, historical writings, short fiction, drama, and poetry -- the illustrious contributors to this literary anthology examine the impact this potent deity, the Lady of Guadalupe, has had on the people and culture of Mexico, and her influence beyond that country, in Latin America, North America, and Europe. An unprecedented contribution to the literature of the Americas, Goddess of the Americas is an invigorating investigation, an idiosyncratic adoration, and a profound recognition of our need for the sacred, unwavering love of the mother goddess. Toledo Cathedral written by Tom Nickson and has been published by Penn State Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2015-12-07 with Art categories.

Medieval Toledo is famous as a center of Arabic learning and as a home to sizable Jewish, Muslim, and Christian communities. Yet its cathedral—one of the largest, richest, and best preserved in all of Europe—is little known outside Spain. In Toledo Cathedral, Tom Nickson provides the first in-depth analysis of the cathedral’s art and architecture. Focusing on the early thirteenth to the late fourteenth centuries, he examines over two hundred years of change and consolidation, tracing the growth of the cathedral in the city as well as the evolution of sacred places within the cathedral itself. He goes on to consider this substantial monument in terms of its location in Toledo, Spain’s most cosmopolitan city in the medieval period. Nickson also addresses the importance and symbolic significance of Toledo’s cathedral to the city and the art and architecture of the medieval Iberian Peninsula, showing how it fits in with broader narratives of change in the arts, culture, and ideology of the late medieval period in Spain and in Mediterranean Europe as a whole.

Critical Reflections written by James A. Parr and has been published by Bucknell University Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2006 with Literary Criticism categories.

This volume seeks to explore developments in the study of sixteenth- and seventeenth-century Spanish literature over the past decade through the prism of a homage volume that recognizes the contributions of James A. Parr. In his ground-breaking 1974 essay in Hispania, he challenged Hispanists to take note of developments in the fields of English and Comparative Studies, not to jump on the bandwagon, but to explore the emerging approaches to textual study in order to identify and adapt those aspects that could help to illuminate the field. In his own work, Parr followed that advice, with studies that incorporated new approaches to genre theory, narratology, and canonicity in order to explore dramatic and prose texts, and Don Quixote. The studies in this anthology make use of many of Parr's innovations, indicating that his work has had a long-lasting impact on the field of Golden Age Hispanism.
