El Tratado de la pintura, una serie de notas de Leonardo sobre técnicas, perspectiva, maneras de representar y discusiones en las cuales se entrelazan la ciencia y el arte, pasó a manos del más fiel discípulo del genio a su muerte. Sus descendientes no siguieron el ejemplo de atesorarlo, y el Tratado recorrió Europa más como un fantasma que como un libro tangible. Pasarían casi dos siglos hasta que fuera debidamente publicado. El Tratado comienza con una disquisición acerca de si la pintura es o no una ciencia, continúa con toda una reflexión filosófica sobre la manera que tiene el hombre de conocer -principalmente, a través de la vista. Leonardo destaca a la pintura por sobre la poesía, puesto que, se´gun él, "la imaginación no ve tan perfectamente como lo hace el ojo". El pintor es, por lo tanto, "señor de toda clase de gentes y de las cosas todas". Luego reflexiona también sobre la escultura, y dedica muchas páginas del Tratado a comparar la perspectiva lineal con la perspectiva menguante, la perspectiva del color y la perspectiva aérea. Destaca la importancia de las luces y sombras, el uso del color, y las técnicas adecuadas para representar personas, paisajes y objetos. En síntesis, el Tratado de la pintura es el pensamiento y el arte de Da Vinci puestos por escrito. Abordar esta obra permite comprender mejor al gran artista y a familiarizarse con su época, para la cual él implicó una ruptura colosal.
