El tungsteno, del peruano César Vallejo, fue publicada por primera vez en España en 1931 y reeditada en Perú en 1957. Para la década de los treintas el mundo entero se estremecía y en el Perú, que aparentemente no tenía nada que ver con el conflicto bélico mundial, se encontraban grandes yacimientos de tungsteno, un duro metal gris que se utiliza para la fabricación de aceros para la industria armamentista. Eso permitió que se lo incluyera en la lista de productos de mayor demanda por parte de las grandes potencias. Sin duda alguna César Vallejo toma una posición que denuncia el papel no solo de las compañías norteamericanas en América, sino la complicidad de las autoridades civiles, militares y religiosas alrededor de la explotación de minas. La novela puede ser considerada una mezcla de varias vertientes: el indigenismo, que se abría paso en América tanto en la literatura como en las artes plásticas; lo social, pues se denuncian los atropellos que sufren los menos favorecidos a manos de quienes detentan el poder económico; y lo político, en tanto se reivindica la lucha de clases como una opción para vencer esos atropellos y alcanzar el equilibrio social con la dictadura del proletariado.

El tungsteno es una novela de César Vallejo con marcada pretensión social. La trama transcurre en las primeras décadas del siglo XX. La empresa norteamericana Mining Society es propietaria de las minas de tungsteno de Quivilca. Está decidida a extraer el mineral, ante la entrada inminente de los Estados Unidos en la Primera guerra mundial. Por esta razón se contratan peones y empleados indios de Colca. Estos y los directivos de la empresa, se asientan en un paraje cercano a las cabañas de los soras. En una comunidad indígena que siempre había vivido apartada. En el bazar de los hermanos Marino, se reúnen con frecuencia los directivos de la mina. En una de esas sesiones, José Marino entrega su amante Graciela (La Rosada) al comisario Baldazari para que se la cuide durante su viaje. Es un oscuro intercambio de favores. El encuentro termina con la violación y muerte de la joven, en medio de una orgía de alcohol y abuso. Aquí hay un giro dramático. Ante la huida de trabajadores de la minas. Dos jóvenes indios, Isidoro Yepez y Braulio Conchucos, son capturados y los llevan a rastras hasta Colca para comparecer. Debido a los maltrato sufridos, Braulio fallece ante todos. El crimen provoca un levantamiento popular reprimido por los gendarmes, con muertos y heridos. Varios indios van a los calabozos. El tungsteno termina con las reflexiones políticas entre dos personajes: Servando Huanca y Leonidas Benites. Hablan del movimiento revolucionario mundial y del día prometido en que todos los explotadores recibirán una justicia ejemplar y los obreros serán libres.
