El turismo, la industria de servicios más rentable a comienzos del siglo XXI, muestra una tendencia de continuado crecimiento en el mundo, aún a pesar de la ligera contracción experimentada en los últimos meses del año 2001, el 1,3%, como consecuencia de los atentados terroristas del 11 de septiembre del mismo año. España, por el contrario, sólo ha mostrado un ligero descenso en su ritmo de crecimiento, que ha sido superior a la media mundial, ya que en el año 2001 el turismo se incrementó de media un 3,4% respecto al año anterior, situándose en el segundo puesto mundial por detrás de Francia, y aportando el 12% al PIB nacional. En este contexto, la región de Castilla-La Mancha muestra en los últimos años un importante incremento continuado de viajeros, hasta situarse en cuarta posición en el conjunto del ranking nacional y en segundo lugar como destino del turismo de interior, alcanzando cerca de los dos millones de turistas en el año 2001. El turismo constituye un sector estratégico para su economía al participar en la misma con un 10% del PIB regional. Las importantes inversiones realizadas por el sector y una oferta cada vez de mayor calidad, más amplia y diversificada, centrada en las riquezas histórico-culturales y fundamentalmente naturales, han sido dos de los factores que han contribuido al auge experimentado por el sector turístico. A ello debemos añadir la puesta en práctica de una política turística dirigida a elaborar un programa de promoción de la misma, junto con la inversión en una financiación suficiente por parte de las diferentes administraciones, tanto regional como provinciales y locales.
