Don Quijote se sintió presa del terror cuando supo que su «verdadera historia» era producto de la imaginación febril de un historiador árabe, Cide Hamete Benengeli. Su miedo estaba justificado, dada la proclividad de la literatura árabe a los elementos maravillosos, los mismos que Ramón Menéndez Pidal consideró foráneos a la narrativa española cuando se refirió al «invencible desvío que la inventiva ibérica siente por las quimeras fantásticas». La presente edición de la leyenda morisca de Buluqiya constituye una excepción a las teorías del ilustre maestro, y a la vez confirma los temores de Don Quijote. Un anónimo morisco aljamiado adapta a la prosa española la familiaridad gozosa con la 'literatura de mirabilia' que caracteriza a la narrativa árabe. De remoto origen indopersa y sumerio, la historia narra el viaje de Buluqiya a los confines del universo en busca de un profeta aún por nacer llamado Mahoma. En sus vertiginosos desplazamientos escatológicos a través del tiempo y del espacio, el héroe encuentra islas de oro, árboles dotados del poder del habla, aves del Paraíso de plumas de esmeralda, caballos que vuelan como Clavileño, ángeles de luz que rielan por las aguas, pero no logra dar con el Profeta. El refundidor morisco dialoga con las «Mil y una noches» y sobre todo con las «Qisas al-anbiya» o «Historia de los profetas de Tal’labi», cuya traducción del árabe consta aquí junto a la versión aljamiada. Pero más que las maravillas del relato, lo que realmente le importaría a los lectores clandestinos del morisco era la búsqueda simbólica de su identidad islámica, que probó ser tan elusiva para ellos en la España renacentista como resultó el Profeta Mahoma para el infatigable viajero ultramundano

The canon of Hispanic mysticism is expanding. No longer is our picture of this special brand of early modern devotional practice limited to a handful of venerable saints. Instead, we recognize a wide range of marginal figures as practitioners of mysticism, broadly defined. Neither do we limit the study of mysticism necessarily to the Christian religion, nor even to the realm of literature. Representations of mysticism are also found in the visual, plastic and musical arts. The terminology and theoretical framework of mysticism permeate early modern Hispanic cultures. Taking as its main subject a series of notorious forgeries by Muslim converts in sixteenth-century Granada (including an apocryphal gospel in Arabic), this book studies the emotional, cultural and religious world view of the Morisco minority and the complexity of its identity, caught between the wish to respect Arabic cultural traditions, and the pressures of evangelization and efforts at integration into “Old Christian” society. Orientalist scholarship in Early Modern Spain, in which an interest in Oriental languages, mainly Arabic, was linked to important historiographical questions, such as the uses and value of Arabic sources and the problem of the integration of al-Andalus within a providentialist history of Spain, is also addressed. The authors consider these issues not only from a local point of view, but from a wider perspective, in an attempt to understand how these matters related to more general European intellectual and religious developments.

Los antiguos folios nos ofrecen auténticas sorpresas: tenemos testimonios sobrecogidos sobre cómo los musulmanes sufrieron la caída de Granada y la persecución inquisitorial; una novela ejemplar a la italiana endeudada con Lope y con Quevedo pero imbuida con una moraleja islamizante; el extraño caso de un morisco maurófilo; talismanes para hacerse invisible, para protegerse de los genios y para la buena memoria; interpretaciones de la Celestina como texto disidente; instrucciones pías sobre cómo hacer el amor recitando azoras coránicas y sonetos de Lope de Vega. Las letras aljamiado-moriscas cierran filas a la vez con la literatura española y con la literatura islámica, y acaso, aún más: constituyen el tercer espacio del encuentro —y del choque— entre ambas. Este libro nos permite el privilegio de escuchar por primera vez la voz, largamente silenciada, de sus autores secretos.
