It shows the different approaches to engaging the public, challenges and how progress can be achieved. CANE: Camberwell Assessment of Need for the Elderly is a tool for assessing the needs of older people and particularly those with mental health problems. It is based on the Camberwell Assessment of Need, a widely used needs assessment for people with severe mental illness. Needs are assessed in 24 areas of life and cover a broad range of health, social and psychological domains. Also included are two items that assess the needs of those who care for the older person. The CANE is a comprehensive assessment instrument, suitable for both research and clinical use. This book contains chapters on its development, and its application in various settings and populations, such as day hospitals, sheltered housing, primary care, acute hospital wards, services for early-onset dementia, and long-term care settings. There are also chapters on its use in Spain and Germany. Both the full version CANE and short version (CANE–S) are included in photocopiable format, along with a detailed manual, a full training programme and scoring guidance. The CANE has been rigorously developed by a multi-disciplinary team at University College London in collaboration with other academic centres, and is suitable for use in all settings involving older persons.

This unique, concise ready reference for daily use collates for the first time the most useful, practical and simple assessment scales used in geriatric settings. It provides tools to identify clinical conditions and health outcomes objectively and reliably. It is essential as a clinical primer and everyday reference guide for all practising and training members of multidisciplinary teams, including consultants and doctors in specialist training, career grade doctors and general practitioners, and medical students; nurses, health visitors, dieticians, and social workers; allied health professionals such as physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists; and managers of elderly care services.'Assessment is central to the practice of Geriatric Medicine. All members of the multidisciplinary team require a sound knowledge of the basic principles of measurement scales. We need to be competent in using and selecting appropriate scales, understanding which scales are valid and fit for purpose. Unfortunately, up to now, this has been a difficult task often requiring reference to original papers. Dr Gupta's scholarship has come to the rescue. He has trawled through the many hundreds of scales available selecting those most useful for the specialty. This book will be valuable to all members of the multidisciplinary team. Dr Gupta has done an excellent job outlining the theory and practice of measurement scales. He has put together an extremely useful compendium of scales. I congratulate him and wish his publication every success. I can foresee this publication becoming an essential text for every unit library and valuable book for individual clinicians.' - Dr Jeremy Playfer in his Foreword. 'This book summarises the most commonly used validated assessment scales which can be used by medical students, postgraduate trainees, consultants and the multi-disciplinary team members. I hope a copy of this book will be kept on every ward, outpatient department and GP practice for daily use and reference' - Professor Bim Bhowmick OBE in his Foreword.

Examine recently developed concepts and strategies to help social workers and caregivers improve the quality of care for senior citizens! Older People and Their Caregivers Across the Spectrum of Care focuses on two major aspects of elderly care: assessment and caregiving. This book examines assessment techniques and models used by social workers and other health care professionals to determine the type and extent of care necessary to meet the needs of the elderly. In addition, it voices recent concerns about the use of standardized models for all older adults. This book also addresses the burdens and benefits of being a caregiver to older relatives or friends and mentions several programs made available for caregivers through social services. Older People and Their Caregivers Across the Spectrum of Care reviews assessment techniques and practice models that address issues such as abuse and HIV/AIDS care. This book also provides information about currently overlooked issues that will increasingly affect assessment and intervention, including diversity in cultural or religious beliefs and sexual orientation. This book is also unique in its focus on those unsung, unpaid heroes—relatives and friends—who assist elderly companions with their financial, social, and physical daily needs. With Older People and Their Caregivers Across the Spectrum of Care you’ll find vital information on: two elderly victims’ services, one involving social services and the other involving criminal action the challenges of assessing older adults with HIV/AIDS the pros and cons of long-distance caregiving a life course assessment intervention model used at military colleges to help officers prepare proactively for parent care the Caregivers and Professionals Partnership (CAPP), which employs innovative outreach strategies to family caregivers of adults the Northport VA Friendly Companion Program, which enhances opportunities for interpersonal interaction African-American caregivers and their experiences with African-American elders Social workers and caregivers will find the information in this book vital in their work.
