Electra es una obra de teatro de Benito P�rez Gald�s, en cinco actos, estrenada el 30 de enero de 1901. Plantea la personal versi�n del escritor canario del mito llevado a tragedia sucesivamente por Esquilo, S�focles y Eur�pides, y recuperado en numerosas ocasiones a lo largo de la historia de la cultura. Su planteamiento, comenta Pedro Ortiz-Armengol -presidente de la Asociaci�n Internacional de Galdosistas desde 1990 hasta su muerte-, fue un "duro alegato contra los poderes de la Iglesia y contra las �rdenes religiosas que la serv�an" en un momento hist�rico en el que en Espa�a, tras los avances liberales del periodo 1868-1873, crec�a de nuevo la influencia de los intereses pol�ticos del Vaticano.El propio autor, Gald�s, se explicaba en una entrevista publicada en el Diario de las Palmas del 7 de febrero de 1901 (y recogida por Stanley Finkenthal):�En Electra puede decirse que he condensado la obra de toda mi vida, mi amor a la verdad, mi lucha constante contra la superstici�n y el fanatismo, y la necesidad de que olvidando nuestro desgraciado pa�s las rutinas, convencionalismos y mentiras, que nos deshonran y envilecen ante el mundo civilizado, pueda realizarse la transformaci�n de una Espa�a nueva que, apoyada en la ciencia y la justicia, pueda resistir las violencias de la fuerza bruta y las sugestiones insidiosas y malvadas sobre las conciencias.�

C.) que se han conservado completas, Electra es muy similar a Antígona en algunos aspectos, trata un tema muy relacionado con las Coéforas, de Esquilo, y que contemporáneamente desarrolla Eurípides. Los hermanos Electra y Orestes, hijos de Agamenón, vengan la muerte de éste en su propia madre Clitemnestra. La movilidad y la variedad de los acontecimientos producen una serie de reacciones en Electra que perfilan su dolorosa personalidad. La obra de Sófocles se ha convertido con el curso del tiempo en el paradigma de la tragedia griega, y sobre ella descansa en gran medida nuestra comprensión de este género y de sus implicaciones filosóficas y religiosas. Su estilo es una mezcla prodigiosa de naturalidad y dignidad literaria, un registro, aparentemente sencillo, que parece dar siempre con la nota justa. Al regresar de la Guerra de Troya, Agamenón es recibido en Micenas por su esposa Clitemnestra quien lo asesina de forma ignominiosa. Castigaba de este modo a su marido por haberse atrevido a sacrificar a la hija de ambos Ifigenia, a fin de que la flota griega pudiera partir rumbo a Troya. Los otros hijos, Orestes, Electra y Crisótemis han sufrido mientras tanto suertes muy diversas. Las dos hermanas siguen viviendo en Micenas -aunque de un modo bien distinto-. Mientras Crisótemis permanece en el palacio, sin expectativas de futuro y sin disfrutar de la vida, Electra vive una existencia lamentable en una choza apartada de la mansión real.En la versión de Eurípides, la presenta casada con un labrador de Micenas. Orestes llega a Micenas, acompañado por Pílades y un anciano, sirviente de Orestes en su niñez (pedagogo), para vengarse del asesino de su padre Agamenón, obedeciendo el oráculo délfico. Envían al anciano a contar a la madre de Orestes, Clitemnestra, que Orestes ha muerto en una carrera de carros, y ellos se preparan para continuar el engaño, llevando supuestamente una urna que lleva sus cenizas.

Electra recounts the murders of Clytemnestra and Aegisthus by Clytemnestra's son Orestes, to avenge their murder of his father Agamemnon, commander of the Greeks at Troy, upon his return home. Sophocles' version is presented from the viewpoint of Electra, Orestes' sister, who laments her father, bears witness to her mother's crime, and for years endures her mother's scorn. When Orestes arrives at last, her mood shifts from grief to joy as Orestes carries out the bloody vengeance. Despite her overwhelming passion for just revenge, Electra admits that her own actions are shameful.
