Excerpt from Incandescent Electric Lamps and Their Application Since the advent of the carbon filament incandescent lamp so many wonderful discoveries have been made that the adoption of the electric glow lamp as an illuminant is now almost universal. A little thought will establish the fact, however, that the improvements made have been chiefly in the lamp itself, the introduction of the metal filament being responsible for the increased efficiency that has placed electric lighting practically within reach of all. In comparison with the advances made in filament construction those made in the direction of scientific artificial lighting have been small. The formation of the Illuminating Engineering Society has done much to create an interest in this important subject, while further, the work of Government Commissions and the publication of their reports on school, factory and library lighting has served still more to impress people with the importance of adequate illumination. If good lighting is important in public institutions it is equally if not more important in the home, and the approved methods of disposing of the light units so as to avoid unnecessary glare and produce an adequate illumination, as well as the judicious selection of wall and ceiling coverings, should be fully understood by all users and installers of electric light. The existing literature on the subject is of too scientific and technical a character for other than scientists, and in presenting this treatise the author hopes that the obvious gap may be filled and that the general reader may be assisted in deciding upon the most suitable candle-power and distribution in his own particular case. The author has to thank Messrs. Siemens Bros, for information concerning tantalum and permission to reproduce one of their diagrams; Messrs. The General Electric Co. for information concerning the drawing down of tungsten filaments; Messrs. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Evolution of the Electric Incandescent Lamp In the following pages an effort has been made to bring together, in a convenient and accessible form, some of these detached fragments which seemed to have present or prospective historical value, and at the same time, as far as practicable, to indicate for the benefit of future investigators the sources from whence they have been derived. It is hoped that each reader will thus be enabled to formulate his own answer to the inquiry as to whom the world is principally indebted for modern incandescent electric lighting. Excerpt from Standard Lighting: With Incandescent Electric Lamps Since an Object is seen by the light which comes to it from the source and thence by reflection to the eye, it follows that color in the Object is seen only when the light contains rays Of that color. For example, a red Object will appear black under light in which red rays are lacking or a blue Object will appear black when blue rays are absent in the source. Daylight is composed of all the colors in proportions seen in the rainbow The light from Mazda lamps contains all the colors composing daylight but if the spectra, or rainbows, Of the two were to be compared it would be seen that the Mazda lamp was richer than daylight in the orange - red region and weaker in the blue. For ordinary purposes, the light from clear Mazda lamps is sufficiently like daylight to answer all requirements, but where color discr1m1nat10n is a factor, as in sorting or grading pro cesses for example, and in the laundry where scorch marks must be readily distinguishable, or where the artificial light is used to supplement daylight, as in an Office, daylight lamps, which screen out the majority Of the excess orange-red rays, find wide application. Excerpt from The Edison Incandescent Electric Light The Edison Light is the most perfect medium of artificial illumination in use. Its adaptability is universal, and wherever artificial light is required, it can be advantageously used. It is in successful operation for street lighting, and effects a better and cheaper illumination than gas or the arc lamp. Plants varying in size from twenty-five lamps to fifteen thousand lamps are in daily use, and in every case these installations are constructed electrically and mechanically in accordance with the methods which the long experience of our Company has shown to be the most suited to produce the best results. All machinery and appliances are manufactured by the various Edison shops in the best manner possible, every article being standardized to the most perfect model. Every defect incident to the establishment of an entirely new industry, whether in principle of structure or method of manufacture, has been carefully eliminated, and the entire equip ment of all Edison plants now represents the highest degree of perfection possible to obtain. The Edison show are under the management of the most skilled and practical electricians and electrical engineers, who have been associated with Mr. Edison from the time of his early experiments, and who are familiar with every branch of the business, having aided in the first incandescent electric light plant ever operated, namely, the Menlo Park exhibit. The enormous product of Edison light equipment which has been turned out, and is now in operation in every quarter of the globe, has resulted in the acquirement of a most thorough knowledge of the best processes of manufacturing, and their unequaled facilities restricts the cost of production to the lowest figure consistent with the high standard of excellence which is always maintained. Excerpt from Incandescent Electric Lights: With Particular Reference to the Edison Lamps All these attempts had but partially succeeded, to say nothing more, when, in 1879. The new incandescent carbon lamp of Mr. Edison was announced, and many savants, and myself in particular, doubted the exactness of the allegations which came to us from America. The carbonized paper horse-shoe appeared incapable of resisting mechanical shocks, and of supporting incandescence for any length of time. At this epoch Mr. Swan himself said that up to that time he had not been able to obtain any very satisfactory results by an analagous dis position of the incandescent organ. Excerpt from The Present Condition of Electric Lighting Hamburg has, at present, only 25 plants in operation, with about 80 arc lights and incandescent ones. Of these, four establishments, with 25 arc lights and 200 incandescent lights, belong to the Hamburg government and are worked by gas-motors, while the larger private works use steam-engines for power.
