This thesis shows that silicon resonators that are infiltrated with nonlinear polymer fulfil the requirements of modern electro-optic modulators such as a small footprint and a large modulation bandwidth. The three major challenges of this hybrid approach are addressed. The first part of this thesis shows that bleaching of a chromophore doped polymer cladding can be used as trimming mechanism in order to compensate random shifts of the resonance frequency during fabrication. In the second part it is described how electro-optically tunable photonic crystal resonantors with high quality factors can be realized. Finally the problem of low electro-optic coefficients inside the polymer for integrated silicon structures is addressed.

We study the potential of the silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) platform for integrated optics. The unique properties of selected organic materials are added to silicon devices made with CMOS-based processes. We investigate the feasibility of this approach by making prototypes of key components in form of photonic integrated circuits: SOH lasers and SOH modulators are designed, fabricated, post-processed, and characterized. Application scenarios are identified.

In this book, the first high-speed silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) modulator is demonstrated by exploiting a highly-nonlinear polymer cladding and a silicon waveguide. By using a liquid crystal cladding instead, an ultra-low power phase shifter is obtained. A third type of device is proposed for achieving three-wave mixing on the silicon-organic hybrid (SOH) platform. Finally, new physical constants which describe the optical absorption in charge accumulation/inversion layers in silicon are determined.

In the last 10 years there have been major advances in fundamental understanding and applications and a vast portfolio of new polymer structures with unique and tailored properties was developed. Work moved from a chemical repeat unit structure to one more based on structural control, new polymerization methodologies, properties, processing, and applications. The 4th Edition takes this into account and will be completely rewritten and reorganized, focusing on spin coating, spray coating, blade/slot die coating, layer-by-layer assembly, and fiber spinning methods; property characterizations of redox, interfacial, electrical, and optical phenomena; and commercial applications.

Nanostructured silicon-germanium (SiGe) opens up the prospects of novel and enhanced electronic device performance, especially for semiconductor devices. Silicon-germanium (SiGe) nanostructures reviews the materials science of nanostructures and their properties and applications in different electronic devices. The introductory part one covers the structural properties of SiGe nanostructures, with a further chapter discussing electronic band structures of SiGe alloys. Part two concentrates on the formation of SiGe nanostructures, with chapters on different methods of crystal growth such as molecular beam epitaxy and chemical vapour deposition. This part also includes chapters covering strain engineering and modelling. Part three covers the material properties of SiGe nanostructures, including chapters on such topics as strain-induced defects, transport properties and microcavities and quantum cascade laser structures. In Part four, devices utilising SiGe alloys are discussed. Chapters cover ultra large scale integrated applications, MOSFETs and the use of SiGe in different types of transistors and optical devices. With its distinguished editors and team of international contributors, Silicon-germanium (SiGe) nanostructures is a standard reference for researchers focusing on semiconductor devices and materials in industry and academia, particularly those interested in nanostructures. Polymer-based electro-optical modulators are, generally, applicable to many fields but their applications to analog optical links and silicon photonic integrated circuits are specifically emphasized in this dissertation. This dissertation aims to improve the linearity characteristics of polymer-based electro-optic modulators for their practical application in high speed analog optical links. Domain-inversion technique is employed to linearize a two-section Y-fed directional coupler modulator. The spurious free dynamic range as high as 119dB/Hz2/3 has been demonstrated with 11dB enhancement over the conventional Mach-Zehnder modulator at low frequency. For high speed modulation, a traveling wave electrode with low RF loss and large bandwidth is designed and installed in a linearized Y-fed directional coupler modulator. The spurious free dynamic range has been measured in the range of 110±3dB/Hz2/3 at 2~8GHz frequency. For digital application of polymer-based electro-optic modulators, a hybrid silicon photonic crystal waveguide modulator was investigated with focus on size-reduction and electro-optic efficiency enhancement. The slow group velocity of photonic crystal waveguides promises two orders of magnitude size-reduction in device footprint compared with the conventional strip waveguide. Infiltration of an electro-optic polymer into the slot waveguide can infuse silicon with nonlinear optical properties. To actualize these benefits of a hybrid silicon photonic crystal waveguide modulator, nano-fabrication process was developed and optimized in this work.
