Ionic Liquid Electrochemical Gas Sensor written by and has been published by this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2019 with Air pollution. (TD883) categories.

There are increasing environmental concerns and workplace safety issues because of the gas emissions and air pollutions from industrial waste-gas as well as accidental gas leak from the production and gathering pipelines. Industrial companies are using various types of gas sensor as they need to prevent gas leak and gas explosion incidents. To fully perform the demanded assignment, a sensor must function in a real-time continuous mode and should exhibit excellent sensing sensitivity, stability, selectivity. On top of these features, a sensor also has to respond to environmental variation promptly. Of course, low power consumption and low cost are additional characteristics that favor companies. Current prevailing chemical sensors are categorized as seven types: optical chemical sensor, electric chemical sensor, mass sensitive chemical sensor, magnetic chemical sensor, thermometric chemical sensor, radiation chemical sensor, and electrochemical sensor. Optical chemical sensors are giving very accurate sensing signals but are very expensive. Electric chemical sensors are having low detection limits and thus are most commonly used in industries, but they are experiencing low sensitivity problems. Mass sensitive chemical sensors are having excellent sensitivity, but their problem is low selectivity. Magnetic chemical sensors are low cost and non-invasive sensing technologies, but they also have an issue of low sensitivity, not to mention that they are usually in large sizes and very difficult to be miniaturized. Thermometric chemical sensors exhibit excellent sensitivity, but they have narrow sensing dynamic range so that interferential gases often times will cause false alarms. Radiation chemical sensors have good sensitivity and selectivity, but their applications are limited. Electrochemical sensors have excellent sensing response time, good sensitivity and selectivity, and are low cost and low power consumption devices. Problems for traditional electrochemical sensors come from the solvent evaporation as well as the fact that their functions are temperature and moisture dependent. Therefore, my research work is focused on the use of ionic liquid as the electrolyte to replace traditional aqueous and non-aqueous organic solvents with the new analytical methods development and characterizations. To minimize false or interferential sensing signals, we proposed an idea of applying sensor arrays to conduct cross sensor validations. Starting from single gas sensing towards the detection of multiple gases. The single gas detections and characterizations were rooted from previous publications in the lab, but we also performed the stability and sensitivity study on oxygen sensing at a relative long-term and did a systematical characterization for the ionic liquid and electrode interfacial relaxation process with and without an applied potential. Besides, we selected hydrogen as a reference gas to process both qualitative and quantitative analyses, in single gas condition as well as multiple gases conditions.
