This thesis presents a qualitative advance in our understanding of quantum effects in layered magnetic materials. The nearest neighbor Heisenberg ferromagnetic ranks among the oldest and most fundamental models of quantum many body effects. It has long been established that in one dimension quantum fluctuations lead to a quantum disordered ground state with fractional excitations called spinons." In two dimensions, the ground state of the Heisenberg model displays static order and to first approximation the dynamics can be described as semi-classical spin waves. Through theoretical advances the author demonstrates that at high energy around particular points in reciprocal space these semi-classical spin-waves deconfine into fractional excitations akin to the one-dimensional spinons. He thereby provides the first explanation of a long-standing experimental observation. In the second half of his thesis Bastien Dalla Piazza develops a unified description of the magnetic excitation spectra of a range of cuprate parent compounds to the high temperature superconductors.

Certain magnetic materials have optical properties that make them attractive for a wide variety of applications such as optical switches. This book describes the physics of one class of such magnetooptic materials, the insulating antiferromagnets. The authors summarize recent results concerning the structure, optical properties, spectroscopy, and magnetooptical properties of these materials. In particular, they consider magnetic phase transitions, symmetry effects, the linear magnetooptical effect, magnons, spectroscopic study of spin waves, photoinduced magnetic effects, and the effects of impurities.

An international workshop on Elementary Excitations and Fluctuations in Magnetic Systems was held in San Miniato, Italy, for five days beginning 28 May, 1984. The workshop comprised eight working sessions that contai ned a total of 43 invited talks, and 58 scientists were in attendance from 14 countries. Our aim was to review some topics of current interest in the statistical physics of magnetic materials and models, with an emphasis on theoretical studies and confrontations between these and experimental and computer simulation data. book contains summary papers written by the invited speakers, and This the material will be of immediate interest to graduate students and resear chers engaged in studies of magnetic properties. There is, perhaps, no ef fective way to record and convey the benefit of the numerous discussions between the participants that are a significant integral feature of a work shop. The magnificent .venue of the workshop, I Cappuccini, was made availa ble to us by the. Cassa di Risparmio San Miniato. Financial support for the workshop was received from Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Universita degli Studi di Firenze and the Gruppo Nazionale Struttura, della Materia. Our administrative load and the burden of preparing the proceedings for publication was made light by the talents of Carla Pardini (CNR, Florence), and Caroline Monypenny and Jane Warren (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory). Fina 11y, we wish to thank all the participants for their attendance and individual contributions to the success of the workshop.

Magnetization Oscillations And Waves written by Alexander G. Gurevich and has been published by CRC Press this book supported file pdf, txt, epub, kindle and other format this book has been release on 2020-12-17 with Science categories.

Written by two well-known researchers in the field, this useful reference takes an applied approach to high frequency processes including oscillations and waves in ferromagnets, antiferromagnets, and ferrimagnets. Problems evaluated include ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic resonances, spin waves, nonlinear processes, and high frequency manifestations of interactions between the magnetic system and other systems of magnetically ordered substances as elastic waves and charge carriers. Unlike previous monographs on this subject, which are highly theoretical and written for very advanced readers, this book requires only an average college background in mathematics and experimental physics. It will be a valuable addition to the library of engineers and scientists in research and development for communications applications, and scientists interested in nonlinear magnetic phenomena. It also serves as an excellent introduction to the topic for newcomers in the field. Magnetization Oscillations and Waves not only presents results but also shows readers how to obtain them; most formulas are derived with so many details that readers can reproduce them. The book includes many summaries and tables and detailed references to significant work in the area by European researchers.

The fascinating phenomenon ferromagnetism is far from being fully understood, although it surely belongs to the oldest problems of solid state physics. For any investigation it appears recommendable to distinguish between materials whose spontaneous magnetization stems from localized electrons of a partially ?lled atomic shell and those in which it is due to itinerant electrons of a partially ?lled conduction band. In the latter case one speaks of band-ferromagnetism, prototypes of which are the classical ferromagnets Fe, Co, and Ni. The present book is a status report on the remarkable progress that has recently been made towards a microscopic understanding of band-ferromagnetism as an electron c- relation e?ect. The authors of the various chapters of this book “Band-Ferromagnetism: Ground-State and Finite-Temperature Phenomena” participated as selected - perts in the 242nd WE-Heraeus-Seminar (4-6 October 2000) held under almost the same title in Wandlitz near Berlin (Germany). It was the second seminar of this type in Wandlitz. (The ?rst in 1998 dealt with the complementary topic of the physics of local-moment ferromagnets such as Gd). Twenty-six invited spe- ers from ten di?erent countries together with ?fty-?ve further participants, who presented contributions in form of posters, spent three days together discussing in an enthusiastic and fertile manner the hot topics of band-ferromagnetism.

An international workshop on Elementary Excitations and Fluctuations in Magnetic Systems was held in Turin for five days beginning 25 May, 1987. The workshop followed much the same format as the one with the same title held in San Miniato in 1984 (proceedings: Springer Series in-Solid-State Sciences, Vol. 54), that most participants contributed talks and provided papers for the proceedings. While many of the participants had attended the first workshop, 15 of the 40 invited review papers were presented by scientists who had not. The majority of the talks reported theoretical work concerned with the introduction of new techniques. However, experimental work was also well represented, not least because many of the reported theoretical studies were motivated by experimental findings, and a highlight of the workshop was an extremely stimulating session devoted to recent neutron scattering measure ments, on various systems, that exploited polarization analysis. The fine venue of the workshop, Villa Gualino, with its excellent facili ties and spacious accommodation, helped to produce a delightful relaxed and friendly atmosphere. For the use of Villa Gualino and significant financial support we are indebted to our host organization, the Institute for Scien tific Interchange (lSI). Additional financial support came from the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche (CNR), Centro Interuniversitario di Struttura della Material del Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione (CISM-MPI) and Gruppo Nazionale di Struttura della Materia (GNSM-CNR).
