Similarities in the form of the Schrodinger equation that governs the behaviour of electronic wavefunctions, and MaxwellÂ's equations which govern the behaviour of electromagnetic waves, allow ideas that originated in solid state physics to be easily applied to electromagnetic waves in photonic structures. While electrons moving through a semiconductor experience a periodic variation in charge, in a photonic crystal electromagnetic waves experience a periodic variation in refractive index. This leads to ideas such as bandstructure being applicable to the one and two dimensional photonic crystals used in this work. The following work will contain theoretical and experimental studies of the transmission through, and electric fields within, one dimensional photonic crystals. A slow variation in the structure of these crystals will lead to the bandstructure shifting, with an photonic analogy of electronic Bloch oscillations and Wannier-Stark ladders being seen in these structures. The two dimensional photonic crystals will be shown, through Hamiltonian ray tracing, to support both stable and chaotic ray paths. Examination of the phase space reveals the existence of Â'Dynamical BarriersÂ', regions in phase space supporting stable ray trajectories that divide separate regions in which the ray trajectories are chaotic. Various manners in which the bandstructure may be varied will be presented, along with a proposed switch that may be made using these structures. While the ray tracing will be carried out in photonic crystals in the limit of infinitesimally thin dielectric sheets, the model will then be developed to show the bandstructure of a photonic crystal made from finite width dielectric sheets, with examples of dispersion surfaces for these structures being presented.

The book is devoted to processes at the interaction of high energy charged particles and photons with crystals. Among them are the creation of electron-positron pair by photon in crystalline field, the radiation of particles in this field and, connected with these effects, the new type of electromagnetic showers in crystals, the channeling of fast particles in crystal and channeling radiation. At high energies, the processes of quantum electrodynamics (QED) in intense external fields play an important role in crystals. The first third of the book contains a new formulation of QED in external fields which is valid for any external field, including an essentially nonuniform one and has vast applications.

Photonic crystals and metamaterials, both composed of artificial structures, are two interesting areas in electromagnetism and optics. New phenomena in photonic crystals and metamaterials are being discovered, including some not found in natural materials. This thesis presents my research work in the two areas. Photonic crystals are periodically arranged artificial structures, mostly made from dielectric materials, with period on the same order of the wavelength of the working electromagnetic wave. The wave propagation in photonic crystals is determined by the Bragg scattering of the periodic structure. Photonic band-gaps can be present for a properly designed photonic crystal. Electromagnetic waves with frequency within the range of the band-gap are suppressed from propagating in the photonic crystal. With surface defects, a photonic crystal could support surface modes that are localized on the surface of the crystal, with mode frequencies within the band-gap. With line defects, a photonic crystal could allow the propagation of electromagnetic waves along the channels. The study of surface modes and waveguiding properties of a 2D photonic crystal will be presented in Chapter 1. Metamaterials are generally composed of artificial structures with sizes one order smaller than the wavelength and can be approximated as effective media. Effective macroscopic parameters such as electric permittivity ϵ, magnetic permeability ? are used to characterize the wave propagation in metamaterials. The fundamental structures of the metamaterials affect strongly their macroscopic properties. By designing the fundamental structures of the metamaterials, the effective parameters can be tuned and different electromagnetic properties can be achieved. One important aspect of metamaterial research is to get artificial magnetism. Metallic split-ring resonators (SRRs) and variants are widely used to build magnetic metamaterials with effective ?

(Cont.) This theory is then combined with negative refraction to study the Veselago-Pendry superlensing effect, and a subwavelength focusing effect beating the classical diffraction limit is found. Third, it is proposed that the superprism effect may occur based purely on phase velocities. This effect can produce a magnitude of dispersion similar to that based on group velocities, making beam-steering possible in free space. Fourth, the analysis of light propagation is applied to the radiation from charged particles traveling through electromagnetic crystals. It is found that when coupled with Smith-Purcell radiation, Cherenkov radiation can occur with a reversed direction of propagation or a reversed radiation cone. Fifth, a model is constructed to simulate the thermal radiation from photonic crystals directly. Electromagnetic crystals are found to bring significant enhancement to the emissivity, with potential applications in thermal photovoltaic and incandescent lighting sources.

We explore the possibility of generating and manipulating single photon states through all-optical chi(2) nonlinear interactions in photonic crystals. In particular two schemes are presented: one for the generation of entangled-photon pairs by parametric down-conversion in one-dimensional nonlinear photonic crystals (Bragg stacks), and one for the observation of strong coupling between single photons in semiconductor micro-cavities. Both schemes aim to combine the exceptionally high value of the chi(2) nonlinearity of GaAs, with the recently-developed technology for the fabrication of nanometer-scale structures that geometrically influence the properties of light. In a second, unrelated, part of the thesis we describe some solutions to Maxwell's equations that have interesting topological properties. This is part of a more speculative project aimed at creating the solutions in the lab.
