Excerpt from Elementary Chemistry for Coal-Mining Students For many years I have delivered both popular and more or less systematic courses of lectures to deputies and other workers in coal mines, students who have little or no knowledge of chemistry but are keenly desirous of learning something of the subject which may be useful to them in their daily occupation. The ordinary text-book of chemistry does not meet their requirements, for it contains much that it is unnecessary for them to study, and much that it is desirable for them to know is not to be found in it. The present work has been prepared with the object of meeting the wants of these as well as of other students of coal-mining. It is really a compilation of those parts of chemistry, pure and applied, that are cognate to the coal-mining industry, and does not pretend to be a text-book of chemistry. Its arrangement is based on the plan I have adopted in my lectures, namely, to divide the subject into two parts. The first part includes the description of those elements that enter into the composition of coal, among the compounds of which are found all the gases and most of the principal substances met with in coal mines. In this part a certain amount of necessary chemical theory is introduced. The first nine chapters are devoted to this part and in them special attention has been given to such subjects as irrespirable and extinctive atmospheres, the occurrence and detection of poisonous gases and their action on the animal system, the safety lamp and its use in the detection of fire-damp, the hygrometer and its use. The second part is included in the next four chapters and treats of the chemistry of coal and coke, the coking process, by-products and their recovery, explosives, explosions of gases and coal dust. Excerpt from Elementary Chemistry for Coal-Mining Students N o alteration in the composition of an iron bar takes place when it is encircled by a current of electricity, though a certain change takes place which enables it to attract nails. The bar remains iron whether it is able to attract the nails or not, and Whatever change has taken place is not a change in composi tion. It is evident from this examination that bodies can undergo two kinds of change: one which does not involve an alteration in the composition of the body, and another which does. Trace Elements in Coal and Coal Combustion Residues focuses on trace metal chemistry of coal and coal combustion residues. Special emphasis is placed on management of coal combustion residues in electric power plants and the influence of coal and associated residues on soils, plants, water, and animals. Topics covered include a brief summary of research sponsored by Electric Power Research Institute, environmental pollution from coal combustion plants in low-rainfall regions, accumulation of trace elements in freshwater mussels near a power plant, testing to evaluate fossil fuel wastes by chemicals and isotopes, transport of metals from coal piles and ash impoundments, leachability and toxicity of metals in fly ash, and plant absorption of chemicals from ash. The book will be a useful reference for environmental and reclamation consultants, environmental engineers, toxicologists, environmental regulatory personnel, officials with electric power utilities and water treatment plants, and soil scientists.

Trace Elements in Coal focuses on the compositions, reactions, and properties of trace elements in coal. The book first discusses the origin of trace elements in coal. The formation of peat; geological and geochemical aspects of coal seams; geology of Australian coals; constitution of coal; history of trace elements in coal; and coal mining in Australia are discussed. The text also clarifies the mode of occurrence of trace elements in coal. The identification of minerals in coal; silicon-rich minerals; carbonate minerals; sulfide minerals; lignites and brown coals; and phosphates are discussed. The book then underscores the methods of analysis. Inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry; atomic absorption spectrometry; spark source mass spectrometry; and neuron activation analysis are described. The text also focuses on the contents of trace elements in coal; comparisons of coal with shale and soil; relationship of radioactivity and coal; and relevance of trace elements in coal. The book is a good source of data for readers wanting to study the trace elements in coal.

Excerpt from The Physics and Chemistry of Mining: An Elementary Class-Book; For the Use of Students Preparing Use of Students Preparing for the Board of Education and County Council Examination in Mining or Qualifying for Colliery Managers Certificates The students Of Mining are an ever-increasing multitude, who by present-day requirements are compelled to pay attention to at least the elements Of many branches Of modern science. The aim Of the Author, in these notes relating to the Physics and Chemistry Of Mining, is to place before the Mining Student a brief repertory of certain truths and phenomena, such as may be classed under that heading, which it is hoped may materially assist him in his studies. As a general rule, text-books on Physics and Chemistry - though Often excellent for the purposes for which they are written - deal largely with subjects which are neither interesting nor useful to the student Of Mining, and either treat very slightly or omit altogether those points which are Of special interest and importance to him. Further, there are very few books in which the principles Of those sciences are dealt with in one volume. Happy he who could learn the causes of things (Virgil, Georgics 11) There is clearly a place for a book on the environmental aspects of trace elements in coal, especially with the increasing use of coal for power production. Our aim is to provide relevant background information and to update the situation regarding trace elements during beneficiation, combustion, .atmospheric deposition, leaching from wastes anti reclamation. The outcome is a balanced account of the overall situation. The initial chapter gives the rationale behind the planning of the book and puts the topics into the context of trace elements in the environment, while the final chapter summarises the subject matter and conclusions of each chapter. The choice of authors was based on their specialised knowledge. Although every effort has been made to ensure uniformity in layout, use of units, references and the like, authors have been given some latitude in expression and their styles have not been curbed. This book is intended primarily for coal scientists and technologists involved in environmental aspects of trace elements during the mining of coal, its beneficiation and usage, especially for power generation, and for regulatory bodies. It is considered to be suitable for relevant postgraduate courses. Just as it has been said that one of Bruckner's symphonies has enough melodies for a Beethoven to have written ten symphonies, so this book has several chapters that could be themes for other books.
