Excerpt from An Elementary Physiology and Hygiene for Use in Schools The aim of the author in writing the present work has been to furnish an elementary text-book in physiology and hygiene which should recognize some of the more important discoveries of recent years concerning matters pertaining to health, and which should also attempt to exemplify in the clearest way the interrelation between physiology and hygiene. The primary object of the study of physiology in our schools is to inculcate an intelligent care of the body. With this in view, matters of hygiene must in one sense take first place, although our understanding of hygiene must be based upon a knowledge of physiology. In the present work the study of the body, of its various parts and their functions, is given full and comprehensive treatment; at the same time lessons on hygiene are given as natural results of the principles of physiology and as closely related thereto. A knowledge of foods and their values and of the causes and distribution of contagious and other germ diseases is of vital importance to every boy and girl. The effect of alcohol upon the various functions of the body is treated throughout the book in direct relation with the particular organs or functions concerned. The dangers connected with the use of alcohol will be found plainly indicated in accord with the results of the latest investigations in that department of science. Any beginning of decay in them ought to receive prompt attention. PERMANENT SET Fig. 68. TEETH: Kinds, Arrangement, and Times of Appearance. The Care of the Teeth.--The teeth need careful attention. They should be thoroughly brushed at least twice a day, on rising and on going to bed. It would be better to clean them after each meal also. If a tooth powder, recommended by a reliable dentist, is not used, a good white castile soap will serve well. It is better to use tepid water. Toothpicks are useful in removing the larger particles. Quill toothpicks are best; metal should never be used. The teeth should be examined twice a year by a dentist, and any cavities promptly filled. Cause of Decay of Teeth.--If the teeth are not thoroughly cleaned the particles of food which remain will soon begin to decay. This decay is caused by the growth of germs, usually some kind of bacteria, and the decay thus begun is likely to develop acids which attack the limy material of which the teeth are composed. When it is necessary to take acid medicines, care should be taken not to let them come in contact with the teeth. Sweet substances are very likely to decompose and form acids; so we must clean the teeth after eating candies. When the teeth are neglected, a limy substance, called tartar, forms on them and encourages decay. The Salivary Glands.--The salivary glands make the saliva and pour it into the mouth. There are three pairs of salivary glands--the parotid, just back of the angle of the jaw, under the ear; its duct opens on the inside of the cheek opposite the second molar of the upper jaw. The...
