Mit den "Elementen der antiken Erzähltheorie" wird die erste deutschsprachige Monographie präsentiert, die systematisch das diskursive Feld der antiken Erzähltheorie analysiert. Anlass zu diesem Unternehmen bietet die Tatsache, dass antike Autoren wie Aristoteles häufig als Vorläufer für moderne erzähltheoretische Kategorien diskutiert werden. Auch wenn es derartige Korrespondenzen gibt, lässt sich nicht leugnen, dass antike erzähltheoretische Begriffe im Lauf ihrer Rezeption eine Umdeutung erfahren haben. Vor diesem Hintergrund arbeitet diese Monographie die Besonderheiten der antiken Erzähltheorie heraus. Zu diesem Zweck werden die wichtigsten antiken Reflexionen über das Erzählen, die sich in den verschiedensten Texten und Gattungen finden und in andere Diskurse eingebunden sind, in vier Kapiteln präsentiert: Zunächst werden die Grundlagen der antiken Erzähltheorie erklärt. Im zweiten Kapitel werden diejenigen Reflexionen analysiert, die zur Ebene der Geschichte (was wird erzählt?) gehören, bevor im dritten Kapitel diejenigen Überlegungen behandelt werden, die die Art und Weise der Präsentation betreffen. Abschließend wird untersucht, welche Wirkungen von Erzählungen in der Antike diskutiert wurden.

Considering the ubiquity of rhetorical training in antiquity, the volume starts from the premise that every first-person statement in ancient literature is in some way rhetorically modelled and aesthetically shaped. Focusing on different types of Greek and Latin literature, poetry and prose, from the Archaic Age to Late Antiquity, the contributions analyse the use and modelling of gender-specific elements in different types of first-person speech, be it that the speaker is (represented as) the author of a work, be it that they feature as characters in the work, narrating their own story or that of others. In doing so, they do not only offer new insights into the rhetorical strategies and literary techniques used to construct a gendered ‘I’ in ancient literature. They also address the form and function of first-person discourse in classical literature in general, touching on fields of research that have increasingly come into focus in recent years, such as authorship studies, studies concerning the ancient notion(s) of the literary persona, as well as a historical narratology that discusses concepts such as the narrator or the literary character in ancient literary theory and practice.

Von der Antike bis in die Gegenwart wird erzählerisches Handeln immer wieder durch bildhafte Ausdrücke veranschaulicht, die den Erzähler in logikwidrigem Kontakt mit der erzählten Welt darstellen und sich damit narratologisch als Metalepsen beschreiben lassen. Dieses Buch behandelt zwei sachlich entgegengesetzte, aber dennoch verwandte metaleptische Bilder des Erzählens: Im einen erscheint der Erzähler als anwesender Beobachter ("wir finden unseren Helden in x"), im anderen als unmittelbarer Urheber der Handlung ("wir haben unseren Helden nach x gebracht"). Beide Bilder werden anhand aussagekräftiger Beispiele von den Anfängen in der frühgriechischen Dichtung über Verwendungen in Mittelalter und Früher Neuzeit bis zu Weiterentwicklungen im modernen Roman verfolgt. Besonderes Augenmerk gilt dabei den impliziten Konzepten des Erzählens, die in den jeweiligen Verwendungen greifbar werden. Tatsächlich zeigen sich hinter den formalen Konstanten teils tiefgreifende Unterschiede, die einen Einblick in epochenspezifische Erzählverständnisse ermöglichen. Damit leistet das Buch nicht nur einen Beitrag zu einer Geschichte abendländischen Erzählens, sondern führt exemplarisch den Nutzen der Diachronen Narratologie vor Augen.
