Im Gegensatz hierzu finden wir bei Can ch y dis gröfste Strenge bei vieler Kürze in der Entwickelung; dagegen leidet die Schönheit des archi tektonischen Baues durch sehr gekünstelte Anordnung und das Leben der Erfindung fehlt gänzlich. Zwischen diesen beiden Extremen habe ich einen Mittelweg einzuschlagm gesucht welcher das Interesse des heuristischen Gedankenganges mit der Strenge des französischen Ana lytikers vereinen und dem Ganzen ein besseres architektonisches Gefüge verleihen soll, als man bisher an diesem Teile der Mathematik bemerkt hat Eben so energisch betont er in der Vorrede zur Geometrie des Maßes: "es sind zwei Hauptforderungen die ich an jeden Unterricht, besonders aber an den gsometrischen stelle; die erste, organische Gliederung, betrifit die Anordnung des Stoffes, die zweite, heu ristischer Gedankengang, die Darstellung desselben. Hinsichtlich der Anordnung ließ man sich bisher "von zwei ganz ercheu formalen Capricen leiten. Die erste Caprice ('maxime' wars schon zu ehrenvoll bezeichnet) besteht darin keine Konstruktion zu verlangen, deren wirkliche thatsächliche Ausführung nicht vorher gelehrt worden ist. Die zweite noch schlimmere Caprice besteht darin, daß man den geometrischen Stofi' nach den Beweismittelri geordnet hat. Und ist es nicht bis heute im ganzen erfolglos geblieben, was er bereits 1854 in der Vomds zum zweiten Teils der Geometrie des Mafasa predigt? Jean-Nicolas-Louis Durand (1760–1834) regarded the Précis of the Lectures on Architecture (1802–5) and its companion volume, the Graphic Portion (1821), as both a basic course for future civil engineers and a treatise. Focusing the practice of architecture on utilitarian and economic values, he assailed the rationale behind classical architectural training: beauty, proportionality, and symbolism. His formal systematization of plans, elevations, and sections transformed architectural design into a selective modular typology in which symmetry and simple geometrical forms prevailed. His emphasis on pragmatic values, to the exclusion of metaphysical concerns, represented architecture as a closed system that subjected its own formal language to logical processes. Now published in English for the first time, the Précis and the Graphic Portion are classics of architectural education.
