The ocean evokes the most romantic images of nature. It is the eternally hostile element that has taken a heavy toll for every act of discovery, sometimes in human lives. There is more to wresting the ocean's secrets from its depths than simply the excitement of struggling with the elements. It is the thrill of ideas, of discoveries made by scientific analysis of oceanic phenomena. There have been quite a few renowned oceanographers who have never set foot aboard ship. All they did was to use the general laws of fluid behavior and mathematical formulas as tools to study the ocean and to predict events. Amazing 'armchair' discoveries of currents and deep sea flows, subsequently confirmed by observations at sea, are fascinat ing. What a scientist feels when uncovering the true behavior of oceanic phenomena in abstract columns of numbers, in long and cumbersome, or sometimes intriguingly simple, mathematical relations, is exhilara tion. My objective has been to bring this delightful esthetic pleasure within everyone's reach - the outcome is this book. Elements of Physical Oceanography provides a broad look at most of the topics of concern to Physical Oceanography without treating any part of the subject matter completely or exhaustively. This book originated in a set of lecture notes for an introductory course in Physical Oceanography given by the author in the Department of Oceanography and Meteorology at Texas A&M University. The book is organized into three parts. Part I on descriptive oceanography covers topics such as nature of oceanographic data, the chemical nature of the ocean, the temperature of the ocean, and temperature-salinity relationships. Part II on oceanic movements discusses accelerations arising from mass distribution and the Earth’s rotation, geostrophic and wind driven currents, waves, and tides. Part III covers various topics such as sound propagation, the heat budget of the ocean, and estuaries. This book aims to provide the non-physical oceanographer with insight into the physical nature of the environment influencing his chosen studies. The physical oceanographer will be somewhat less than satisfied with the treatment and will wish to read the publications referred to and to follow the suggestions for additional reading.

'Introductory Dynamical Oceanography' 2nd ed provides an introduction to Dynamical Physical Oceanography at a level suitable for senior year undergraduate students in the sciences and for graduate students entering oceanography.
