Excerpt from Elements of Inorganic Chemistry, Descriptive and Qualitative This elementary treatise is based upon plans and methods which have been employed in the author's laboratory throughout a series of years, and no work has been incorporated in the text or in the exercises that has not there been proven practicable. A love for the science of chemistry would have for bidden any attempt to add another text-book to the already too extended list of Elementary Chemistries had not the hearty commendations of teachers of national reputation and undoubted ability encouraged both the author and the publisher to put this work in permanent form. Excerpt from A d104-Book of Inorganic Chemistry, Vol. 2: Descriptive, Theoretical, and Practical a Manual for Advanced Students, Part II, Metallic Elements and Qualitative Analysis The favorable reception that has been given to Part I. Of this work has encouraged the author to publish Part II., which completes the volume. The same general method of present ing the subject that was adopted for Part I. Has been fol lowed in this part. The treatment given the classification of the elements by the periodic law it is hoped will prove sufficiently extended to meet the needs of students using this work, although many points in reference to it have not been spoken of. Much work in collecting and bringing periodic facts together has been merely suggested, and then left for the. Student (and instructor) to do, in the hope that it will stimulate a study of these facts, and thus impress them on the mind of the learner. The writer believes that quantitative study should begin early in a course in chemistry, and so much of this has been introduced as experience has shown beginners can profitably do. Excerpt from Elements of Chemistry, Descriptive and Qualitative This briefer course follows. In general, the plan Of Shepard's Elements of Chemistry; but the reader will notice that the student is told, to a still less extent than in the larger book, what he may expect to see while working. Directions for preparing reagents, and equipping the laboratory, and discussions of methods of presentation are not given here, Since these matters are fully treated in the larger book, which is now so generally used that it is readily accessible to all. The subject-matter Of this text is so arranged, and the experiments are SO simplified, that the laboratory work will come within the time available in those schools where but part of the year is allotted to the study of chemistry. The text will also be found accept able in many schools where a special or a technical course is offered. Data for chemical computations given at the begin ning of the chapters, numerous exercises for review or advanced course, a close adherence to inductive methods. Excerpt from Qualitative Analysis: As a Laboratory Basis for the Study of General Inorganic Chemistry This text presents the course of instruction given by the author to the freshman classes at the University of California where the exigencies of vocational courses render it impracticable for a large number of students to devote more than one year to general inorganic chemistry and to qualitative analysis as well. Therefore, the scheme of qualitative analysis is made to serve as a means of correlating the apparently independent experiments of general chemistry. Thus, while the end in view is primarily the imparting of a knowledge of the general subject, familiarity with analytical methods is obtained. The course presupposes good chemical training in the secondary schools, many of its briefer statements being in the nature of a review rather than of first presentation. No attempt has been made to emasculate the work by eliminating the consideration of more difficult points. On the other hand, the tests for individual elements have been varied in order to familiarize the student with as many significant reactions as possible. In the opinion of the author, instruction in science should endeavor to equip the student with principles rather than facts and, what is of still greater import, it should train him in the use of these principles and in the application of them in explaining the phenomena of general experience. The acquisition of relatively large numbers of facts or the memorizing of printed rules and laws is a matter of comparatively easy accomplishment. The ability to analyze a situation and to recognize the underlying principle comes less readily. Still more difficult of acquirement is that mental habit which consistently seeks the explanation of the unfamiliar by means of the well-known. In the author's experience, furthermore, students know facts but lack the perspective which gives the appreciation of relative values. Their facts are for the most part individual units, like so many loose beads without any connecting thread by means of which the whole may be viewed as a unit and the relation of the individuals, each to the other, recognized. From certain of the many books at present on the market a good student may learn much chemistry; but the author has found it necessary to supply in lecture form the correlating factors and to keep pointing out the application of general principles to cases not less typical than the stereotyped illustration discussed in the text.
