Excerpt from Elements Medical Jurisprudence: Interspersed Interspaced a Copious Selection, Curious of Curious Cases, Analyses of Opinions Delivered at Opinions Inquests In presenting this volume to the Profession, I cannot but feel how imperfectly I have fulfilled the object which I had in view, namely, - of rendering it a practical guide for the Medical Jurist. It has long been an acknowledged fact, that no branch of literature is so deficient in this country, as that of Medical Jurisprudence. A few treatises only have as yet appeared, and these, partly from a want of practical application in the details, and partly in consequence of the medico-legal illustrations being drawn from old and recondite sources, have not succeeded to any great extent, in preparing the British medical practitioner for those duties which he is occasionally called upon to perform. Let it not be considered, that, by these remarks, I intend to derogate from the labours of those of my countrymen, who have preceded me in their literary contributions to this science: - the novelty of the subject of which they were treating, as well as the absolute want of all authorities in their own tongue, are circumstances which satisfactorily account for the deficiencies that exist in their writings; they are indeed deficiencies, belonging to the time at which they wrote, or arising from the paucity of materials upon which they had to work. “An engrossing read . . . Her description of the ways in which forensic experiments evolved is as fascinating as the courtroom dramas they accompanied.” —Jess Kidd, The Guardian, “Best Summer Books 2018, as Picked by Writers” A surgeon and chemist at Guys Hospital in London, Professor Alfred Swaine Taylor used new techniques to search the human body for evidence that once had been unseen. As well as tracing poisons, he could identify blood on clothing and weapons, and used hair and fiber analysis to catch killers. Taylor is perhaps best remembered as an expert witness at one of Victorian England’s most infamous trials—that of William Palmer, “The Rugeley Poisoner.” But he was involved in many other intriguing cases, from a skeleton in a carpet bag to a fire that nearly destroyed two towns, and several poisonings in between. Taylor wrote widely on forensic medicine. He gave Charles Dickens a tour of his laboratory, and Wilkie Collins owned copies of his books. His work was known to Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and he inspired the creation of fictional forensic detective Dr. Thorndyke. For Dorothy L. Sayers, Taylors books were the back doors to death. From crime scene to laboratory to courtroom and sometimes to the gallows, this is the world of Professor Alfred Swaine Taylor and his fatal evidence. “A must read for any lover of crime writing, criminology, and Victorian cultural history.” —Fortean Times “Totally fascinating . . . Refers to many famous and not-so-famous cases, as well as giving an insight into this clever, enthusiastic, honourable and dedicated man. Very clearly written and very enjoyable read.” —Michelle Birkby, author of The Baker Street Inquiries series

Excerpt from Elements of Medical Jurisprudence: Or a Succinct and Compendious Description of Such Tokens in the Human Body as Are Requisite to Determine the Judgment of a Coroner, and Courts of Law, in Cases of Divorce, Rape, Murder, &C This useful Manual of Medical Jurisprudence, the first upon this important subject published in England had been long out of prints till a copy fell into the hands of the present publisher last year, when he was induced to reprint it. The demand for this second edition, however, soon exhausted the small impression; a third edition is therefore now submitted to the public, which differs from the former only in a very slight degree.
