A little closer Observation, however, revealed the fact that many. Students accomplished little more than the committing to memory variations of A, B, C, and Of correct geometrical reasoning they had hardly a conception. Excerpt from Elements of Geometry, Vol. 1 The present volume consists of the first five books of the authors' Elements of Geometry, or that portion which relates to Plane Geometry. While the book speaks for itself, We would call attention to some of its most important features. The Introduction presents in the Shortest possible com pass the general outlines of the science to be studied, and leads at once to the actual study itself. The definitions are distributed through the book as they are needed, instead of being grouped in long lists many pages in advance of the propositions to which they apply. An alphabetical index is added for easy reference. The constructions are also distributed, so that the student is taught how to make a figure at the same time that he is required to use it in demonstration. Excerpt from Elements of Plane Geometry, Vol. 1 The only apology necessary for adding another to the many text-books with which the market is overstocked is that this little work on Geometry is very much needed. The greater portion of it was prepared while engaged in teaching the subject, and while all the difficulties of presenting it in a practical manner were fresh in the authors mind. Several friends themselves superior instructors strongly advised its publication, in the hope that it would render the study of the elementary principles of Geometry more simple and easy of comprehension. In teaching Geometry, it appeared, at first, singular that students could master the difficulties of Arithmetic and Algebra, and yet fail to comprehend the relations of magnitudes which appealed to the sense of sight. A little closer observation, however, revealed the fact that many students accomplished little more than the committing to memory variations of "A," "B," "C," and "1," "2," "3." Of correct geometrical reasoning they had hardly a conception. Even the intelligent pupils were found unable to apply the principles to new matter; and the solution of problems not in the book was almost an impossibility. Geometry, if properly taught and thoroughly understood, is just as flexible as Arithmetic or Algebra. Geometry was truly a "rope of sand" to whole classes. Excerpt from Plane Geometry Although the study of geometry is important from an informational point of view, it is generally recognized that a genuine mastery of the subject means real achievement in the solution of original exercises. The chief aim of the authors in preparing this text has been to give such assistance to students as will stimulate insight and develop power to solve exercises of gradually increasing difficulty. The content and organization of the first book of geometry are determining factors in the student's progress in the sub ject. The first ten or twenty theorems determine whether a student will grasp quickly the general trend of the subject or remain bewildered for an indefinite period. The simplicity and directness of the early theorems and the order in which they are presented are elements of the highest importance in an effective introduction. These elements were given the most careful consideration in the preparation of this text. If the first theorem is used in proving the second and the sec ond in proving the third, and so on, the student will soon see a reason for mastering the content of each theorem. But if the initial theorem is used for the first time in the fifteenth theorem, and the second is used next in the eighth, the first month's work will give the impression: that geometry deals with unrelated facts which lead nowhere. Such an arrange ment of the theorems of geometry will hamper even the strongest students, and will make progress almost impossible for the less capable.
