Excerpt from Elements of Electromagnetic Theory I am of course indebted to many books and memoirs. My obligations are especially great, as the most cursory examination of the book will Show, to the works of Maxwell, Heaviside, and Poynting. I am also much indebted to Professor A. G. Webster for the use of a number of excellent diagrams from his treatise on electrical theory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Elements of the Electromagnetic Theory of Light This little volume, whose object is to present the essentials of the electromagnetic theory of light, was rewritten, at the instance of Messrs. Adam Hilger, Limited, from my Polish treatise on Electricity and Magnetism (3 vols., Warsaw, 1908-1913, published by the kind help of the Mianowski Institution). It consists principally of an English version of chapter viii., vol. ii., of that work with some slight omissions and modifications. In order to make the subject accessible to a larger circle of readers Section 3 was added. The language adopted is mainly vectorial. This is the chief reason of the compactness of the book which, it is hoped, notwithstanding its small number of pages, will be found to contain an easy and complete presentation of the fundamental part of Maxwell's theory of light. I gladly take the opportunity of expressing my best thanks to Messrs. Hilger for enabling me to submit a portion of my treatise to the English reader. Excerpt from Electromagnetic Theory of Light, Vol. 1 The Ether. - The medium assumed for the propagation of light is termed ether. Since ether evidently pervades not only terrestial but interstellar space, it cannot be identical with our atmosphere. Moreover, we must assume that ether pervades all transparent bodies, but, as the behaviour of light in such bodies is different from its behaviour in the air, that the ether pervading the former is different from that of the air that is, that the properties to be assigned the ether differ for different bodies or media. These properties are evidently determined by certain unknown actions (resistances) between the material particles of the given body and the particles (elements) of the ether pervading that body they thus differ for different bodies. Consequently, opaque bodies could also be conceived as permeated by ether, and thus ether itself as pervading not only all space, both terrestial and interstellar, but all bodies 3 that is, it may be regarded as a continuous medium. The pattern set nearly 70 years ago by Maxwell's Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism has had a dominant influence on almost every subsequent English and American text, persisting to the present day. The Treatise was undertaken with the intention of presenting a connected account of the entire known body of electric and magnetic phenomena from the single point of view of Faraday. Thus, it contained little or no mention of the hypotheses put forward on the Continent in earlier years by Riemann, Weber, Kirchhoff, Helmholtz, and others. It is by no means clear that the complete abandonment of these older theories was fortunate for the later development of physics. So far as the purpose of the Treatise was to disseminate the ideas of Faraday, it was undoubtedly fulfilled; as an exposition of the author's own contributions, it proved less successful. By and large, the theories and doctrines peculiar to Maxwell the concept of displacement current, the identity of light and electromagnetic vibrations appeared there in scarcely greater completeness and perhaps in a less attractive form than in the original memoirs. We find that all the first volume and a large part of the second deal with the stationary state. In fact, only a dozen pages are devoted to the general equations of the electromagnetic field, 18 to the propagation of plane waves and the electromagnetic theory of light, and a score more to magneto-optics, all out of a total of 1,000. The mathematical completeness of potential theory and the practical utility of circuit theory have influenced English and American writers in very nearly the same proportion since that day. Only the original and solitary genius of Heaviside succeeded in breaking away from this course. For an exploration of the fundamental content of Maxwell's equations one must turn again to the Continent. There the work of Hertz, Lorentz, Abraham, and Sommerfeld, together with their associates and successors, has led to a vastly deeper understanding of physical phenomena and to industrial developments of tremendous proportions. The present volume attempts a more adequate treatment of variable electromagnetic fields and the theory of wave propagation. Some attention is given to the stationary state, but for the purpose of introducing fundamental concepts under simple conditions, and always with a view to later application in the general case.

Excerpt from Elements of Electromagnetic Theory In this treatise I have tried to present in systematic and definite form a simple, rigorous, and thoroughly modem introduction to the fundamental principles of electromagnetic theory, together with some of the simpler of their more interesting and important non-technical applications. The work makes no pretense to completeness, but is written for the serious student of physics, who will make liberal use of more detailed treatises, of hand-books, and of journals, as occasion demands. I am of course indebted to many books and memoirs. My obligations are especially great, as the most cursory examination of the book will show, to the works of Maxwell, Heaviside, and Poynting. This newly corrected, highly acclaimed text offers intermediate-level juniors and first-year graduate students of physics a rigorous treatment of classical electromagnetics. The authors present a very accessible macroscopic view of classical electromagnetics that emphasizes integrating electromagnetic theory with physical optics. The survey follows the historical development of physics, culminating in the use of four-vector relativity to fully integrate electricity with magnetism. Starting with a brief review of static electricity and magnetism, the treatment advances to examinations of multipole fields, the equations of Laplace and Poisson, dynamic electromagnetism, electromagnetic waves, reflection and refraction, and waveguides. Subsequent chapters explore retarded potentials and fields and radiation by charged particles; antennas; classical electron theory; interference and coherence; scalar diffraction theory and the Fraunhofer limit; Fresnel diffraction and the transition to geometrical optics; and relativistic electrodynamics. A basic knowledge of vector calculus and Fourier analysis is assumed, and several helpful appendices supplement the text. An extensive Solutions Manual is also available.

Excerpt from Electromagnetic Theory and Geometrical Optics I. Introduction. It may seem unnecessary at this late date to discuss the relationship of electromagnetic theory to geometrical Op tics. The content of both fields is well known and everyone knows also that geometrical Optics is the limit for vanishing wave length of electromagnetic theory. Moreover, since Maxwell's theory supersedes the older geometrical optics, presumably, then, geometrical optics could be discarded. The optical industry continues to use it but per haps that is because it is behind the times. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
