Die iranischen Waffen des 15. bis 19. Jahrhunderts sind laut einhelliger Meinung von Fachleuten in ihren Formen und Ornamenten die ästhetisch gelungensten Metallarbeiten ihrer Zeit. Diese Publikation, die erste deutschsprachige seit 1955, stellt Waffentypen, insbesondere aus Damast-Stahl, aus Sammlungen zweier prominenter Museen in den Mittelpunkt. Sie stellt damit weltweit eine der wenigen umfangreichen wissenschaftlichen Bearbeitungen dieses Themas dar, das auch von (Waffen-)Sammlern mit großem Interesse verfolgt wird. Den Kern der Publikation bildet die kunstgeschichtliche und ästhetische Betrachtung der Waffengattungen und ihrer Ornamentik. Die Waffen werden entsprechend ihrer Typisierung, des Materials und der Ornamentik in ihrer Form und Funktion bestimmt. Das Verhältnis von Form und Funktion sowie deren Umspielung und Transformation in der Ornamentik bestimmen die Herangehensweise an das Material. Untersucht werden die Widerspiegelungen von Schutz, Abschreckung und Drohung in Material und Epigraphie, also die apotropäische Wirkung von Waffe und Rüstung. Das vorgestellte Material ist überwiegend unpubliziert und ergänzt so die wichtigsten Sparten um charakteristische Beispiele.

The evil eye--the power to inflict illness, damage to property, or even death simply by gazing at or praising someone--is among the most pervasive and powerful folk beliefs in the Indo-European and Semitic world. It is also one of the oldest, judging from its appearance in the Bible and in Sumerian texts five thousand years old. Remnants of the superstition persist today when we drink toasts, tip waiters, and bless sneezers. To avert the evil eye, Muslim women wear veils, baseball players avoid mentioning a no-hitter in progress, and traditional Jews say their business or health is "not bad" (rather than "good").
