Critica şi autocritica ţineau însă de ritualul de partid şi alcătuiau împreună o strategie bine gândită şi eficientă de devalorizare a individului, supus tirului celorlalţi şi obligat – culmea! – să-şi dea el însuşi lovitura de graţie, după modelul proceselor staliniste. Ce era să răspund? I-am zis că, sigur, îmi voi face autocritica. Şi mi-am făcut-o în felul meu… spre supărarea lui Iorgu Stoian, care a ţinut să-mi spună că nu aşa ne-a fost vorba. Totuşi, în ciuda insuficienţelor mele, partidul mă dorea! Şedinţa organizaţiei de partid la care s-a votat primirea mea s-a transformat într-un exerciţiu de acuzaţii de o neînchipuită duritate, de parcă s-ar fi urmărit nu primirea, ci excluderea, chiar înainte de a fi primit. Voiam să am o carieră universitară, care depindea în bună măsură de atitudinea mea politică. În realitate, totul avea să fie infinit mai complicat. Ca să mă împlinesc, trebuia să cadă mai întâi comunismul, şi asta nu ţinea deloc de mine, ci de jocurile imprevizibile ale istoriei.“ (Lucian Boia)

When Black Boy exploded onto the literary scene in 1945, it caused a sensation. Richard Wright grew up in the woods of Mississippi, with poverty, hunger, fear, and hatred. He lied, stole, and raged at those about him; at six he was a “drunkard,” hanging about in taverns. Surly, brutal, cold, suspicious, and self-pitying, he was surrounded on one side by whites who were either indifferent to him, pitying, or cruel, and on the other by blacks who resented anyone trying to rise above the common lot. At the end of Black Boy, Wright sits poised with pencil in hand, determined to "hurl words into this darkness and wait for an echo."
