Eleven Poems and One Story is a journey from childhood to old age. Through recollections and reflections, the author discovers and reveals truths learned at different periods of his life. He also addresses the issue of where not only he, but humanity as well, is going. The book, Eleven Poems and One Story, is a series of recollections and reflections from the author's life, starting with his childhood in Yugoslavia through his emigration to the United States. Through his poetry and his experiences, the author ponders not only his life but also the meaning of life in general, with all its contradictions. He portrays his journey through life and his struggles as well as those of humanity.Eleven Poems and One Story looks at life through the eyes of a poet-scientist. With the precision and attention to facts common to the scientist and with the philosophical nature of the poet, the author presents us age-old questions in a new light.

This important and inspiring collection is a sweeping overview of poetry written in New York in the year after the 9/11 attacks . . . This anthology contains poems by forty-five of the most important poets of the day, as well as some of the literary world’s most dynamic young voices, all writing in New York City in the year immediately following the World Trade Center attacks. It was inspired by the editors' observation that after the tragic events of September 11th, 2001, poetry was being posted everywhere in New York—on telephone poles, on warehouse walls, on bus shelters, in the letters-to-the-editor section of newspapers ... New Yorkers spontaneously turned to poetry to understand and cope with the tragedy of the attack. Full of humor, love, rage and fear, this diverse collection of poems attests to that power of poetry to express and to heal the human spirit. Featuring poems by Pulitzer Prize winner Stephen Dunn; Best American Poetry series editor David Lehman; National Book Award winner and New York State Poet Jean Valentine; the first ever Nuyorican Slam-Poetry champ; poets laureate of Brooklyn and Queens; and a poem and introduction by National Book Award finalist Alicia Ostriker.

This book contains eleven poems and three short fiction stories about life, love, loss, and the varying emotions one encounters along the way. From the title poem, a triolet for The Cure's vocalist Robert Smith, to the last story That Man of Mine, a flash fiction story about a heartbroken woman on a long journey, it is my sincere hope that you will find as much pleasure in reading them as I found in writing them.

It is difficult to name a recent narrative poem-a verse that tells a story. The arresting narratives in blank verse by Robert Frost, such as "The Hired Man" and "The Witch of Coos," are the most recent of note and now nearly half-a-century old. On the other hand, I am not a consistent student of contemporary poetry, so if I have missed a gem I would gratefully hear about it.I do know that in a longer perspective, going back a century and more, the variety of verse forms-epic, drama, ballad, ode, dramatic monologue-suffered a genuine "extinction event," so for decades a single, historically minor form, the lyric, intended to be sung to musical accompaniment (the lyre), has dominated poetry. It is a brief, emotional outpouring, requiring no set form; the emphasis is upon the poet's emotions. Today, such lyrics are written in free verse, so meter and rhyme, as well as poetic form, goes by the board. Verse has attained that form (or non-form) that T.S. Eliot refused to call poetry. Take away the defining characteristic of an art form (in poetry, meter) and what do you have?I have collected them, here, for readers who delight-or might learn to delight--in poetry that tells a story. Many older readers discovered that delight years ago, in school, but have given up seeking it in modern verse. I have collected my story poems to make a point that for readers whose appetite for lyrics is satiated, narrative verse can reintroduce action, character, suspense, and drama. These eleven poems are united by narrative form; all are longer than the typical lyrical poem. Subjects range from a historic speech delivered by the Comanche chief, Ten Bears, to a tribute to the dogs with whom we live and grow old. There is an O'Henryish short story in verse about an artist and his beautiful but unwilling model and an ironic retelling of the nude ride of Lady Godiva. I have included, after some hesitation, a long poem entitled, "Eros Sought," which dramatizes the earliest dream I can remember from childhood and one of the most frightening and achingly erotic. How could I leave it out? There are highly traditional ballads, a gently half-parody of my favorite verse narrative, "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner," and a humorous tale of a prisoner at Coney Island amusement park.If you ask "What is the theme" of this book, what is the sum of meaning of these 11 stories, my answer is "a certain sense of life." Read the poems, share them. as appropriate, and visit my Facebook page, "Romantic Revolution Books," for other poems, essays, reviews, and dozens of links to Romantic masterpieces and today's most promising writing.

In 2001 the Human Genome Project announced that it had successfully mapped the entire genetic content of human DNA. Scientists, politicians, theologians, and pundits speculated about what would follow, conjuring everything from nightmare scenarios of state-controlled eugenics to the hope of engineering disease-resistant newborns. As with debates surrounding stem-cell research, the seemingly endless possibilities of genetic engineering will continue to influence public opinion and policy into the foreseeable future. Beyond Biotechnology: The Barren Promise of Genetic Engineering distinguishes between the hype and reality of this technology and explains the nuanced and delicate relationship between science and nature. Authors Craig Holdrege and Steve Talbott evaluate the current state of genetic science and examine its potential applications, particularly in agriculture and medicine, as well as the possible dangers. The authors show how the popular view of genetics does not include an understanding of the ways in which genes actually work together in organisms. Simplistic and reductionist views of genes lead to unrealistic expectations and, ultimately, disappointment in the results that genetic engineering actually delivers. The authors explore new developments in genetics, from the discovery of Ònon-DarwinianÓ adaptative mutations in bacteria to evidence that suggests that organisms are far more than mere collections of genetically driven mechanisms. While examining these issues, the authors also answer vital questions that get to the essence of genetic interaction with human biology: Does DNA ÒmanageÓ an organism any more than the organism manages its DNA? Should genetically engineered products be labeled as such? Do the methods of the genetic engineer resemble the centuries-old practices of animal husbandry? Written for lay readers, Beyond Biotechnology is an accessible introduction to the complicated issues of genetic engineering and its potential applications. In the unexplored space between nature and laboratory, a new science is waiting to emerge. Technology-based social and environmental solutions will remain tenuous and at risk of reversal as long as our culture is alienated from the plants and animals on which all life depends.

This is a book of eleven poems that tell stories. They vary from five to over eighty pages in length and they cover a lot of ground and they typically cover it with the direct language of speech. Within there are intimate portraits and there are epic sweeps of future history and there is a lot of moral ambiguity. Each of the tales is told by one or more narrators, but none of them are particularly reliable witnesses. Nothing they say is completely true but how much of it is completely false? Do they know? Can we tell? Does it really matter? Can we pick up truths from lies? Read them and decide for yourself.
