Die kapitalistische Globalisierung führte zu einer historisch einmaligen Konzentration von Macht und Reichtum in den Händen weniger. Die öffentliche Diskussion hierüber wird dabei meist von Verschwörungstheorien einer angeblich omnipotenten globalen Elite bestimmt. Eine kritische sozialwissenschaftliche Theorie von Macht und Eliten im Kontext der Globalisierung fehlte jedoch bislang. Christian Schneickert stellt nun eine empirisch fundierte Aktualisierung der sozialwissenschaftlichen Elitentheorie vor. Er analysiert in seiner international vergleichenden Studie die Sozialstruktur und Globalisierung politischer und wirtschaftlicher Eliten in vier sehr unterschiedlichen Staaten des globalen Nordens und Südens: Brasilien, Deutschland, Indien und den USA. Die Studie umfasst eine umfassende Darstellung der elitentheoretischen Debatten im 20. Jahrhundert und führt diese bis zu ihrer Erneuerung. Diese theoretischen Neuerungen wendet er sodann an umfangreichem empirischen Material an, indem er biografische Daten von 336 Spitzenpolitikern sowie Vorständen von Global 2000-Unternehmen als Analyse nationaler Machtfeldern konzipiert. Christian Schneickert verknüpft damit bisher nicht verfügbare empirische Daten mit Bourdieus Feldtheorie, welche in der deutschsprachigen Soziologie gegenwärtig große Bedeutung erlangt. Aber auch methodisch ist die Studie innovativ, indem neben klassischen statistischen Verfahren insbesondere multiple Korrespondenzanalysen zum Einsatz kommen.

Der vorliegende Sammelband zur historischen Elitenforschung ist das Ergebnis eines internationalen Workshops, der im Frühjahr 2015 in Cluj-Napoca (Klausenburg) stattgefunden hat. Im Mittelpunkt steht die Frage, inwieweit philosophische und soziologische Elite-Konzepte auf das Gebiet der historischen Forschung übertragen werden können und inwiefern die Quellenlage aus dem Gebiet der Sozialgeschichte vom 18. bis ins 20. Jahrhundert eine fundierte Erforschung historischer Eliten ermöglicht. Neben dem praktischen Erfahrungsaustausch über die Perspektiven und Grenzen der historischen Elitenforschung am Beispiel eigener Forschungen werden auch die Bemühungen der Geschichtswissenschaft thematisiert sich gegen andere Sozialwissenschaften, im Besonderen der Soziologie, zu öffnen und in einer Debatte über den Begriff der Elite in der historischen Entwicklung der Neuzeit zu engagieren. Major changes in education have taken place in West Germany over the past three decades. The experience of the Federal Republic differs from that of its European neighbors, since it was conditioned by postwar efforts of the occupying powers to impose a new model of education: the American comprehensive secondary school. Yet the traditional American educational system is at the extreme of what could be called "mass education," whereas that of West Germany is more nearly "class education" that is, more structurally differentiated and keeping a much smaller proportion of pupils in school until age 18. Moreover, as in every developed country, West Germany has experienced increased consumer demand from an expanding middle class for more extended secondary education that does not foreclose post- secondary options. This study shows the structure that has emerged from this unique experiment with elite and mass education. Discussed at length are the four secondary routes: the Gymnasium, the Realschule, the Hauptschule, and the Volksschule. Also featured are the German answers to questions that have occupied the center of attention in American education for some years: education of ethnic minorities, education- ally disadvantaged, and handicapped children. Prepared by a team of researchers associated with the Max Planck Institute for Human Development and Education, the study provides the only comprehensive and up-to-date picture of the pre- sent educational system in the Federal Republic of Germany. Its abundance of statistical data make it a valuable resource for the educator, political scientist, and European Studies specialist. Its clarity renders it accessible to the non-specialist as well.
